Spain has a largely comprehensive and decentralized education system governed by the Ministry of Education. Preschool is optional and split into two cycles up to age 6. Primary education from ages 6 to 12 is compulsory. Secondary education from ages 12 to 16 is also compulsory. At age 16, students can pursue vocational training or a two-year Bachillerato program to qualify for university. Universities require passing an exam after Bachillerato. During Covid-19, schools implemented online and home schooling with ICT training and alternating in-person classes.
