FEELING
A SHIFT?
You’re not
alone.
Generational Motivators
Digital natives who grew up with the
Internet  have entered the workplace,
demanding transparency, accountability,
and meaningful work.
Human-Centered Design
Services, products, and experiences born
from a participatory design process
resonate deeply and solve problems more
completely—and people are beginning to
expect this by default.
Global Action
Today's organizations look
out on a global horizon,
tackling complex challenges
and incredible opportunities
on a scale never imagined
by their predecessors.
Open Exchange
The Internet has created new
possibilities for finding shared
meaning, increasing
collaboration, and for
disrupting legacy hierarchies
based on access to exclusive
information or status.
Emerging Technologies
Everywhere-connectivity, next-
generation mobile devices, and
commodity cloud-computing services
have combined to reshape how we use,
create, and share information and
content.
FEELING
A SHIFT?
You’re not
alone.

Why CEOs can’t afford to ignore culture
1. CULTURE
1. What's it like working with your team?
2. What would you say are the company’s top priorities?
Do you understand your part in that?
3. How would you describe the company culture?
4. How do people talk about their work here?
5. How much flexibility to your have in prioritizing your
work schedule and tasks?
CULTURE INQUIRY
2. TOOLS

& ENVIRONMENT
1. What are some of the places where you see the need for
new, improved technology or tools?
2. How do you think your work would be impacted by better
(easy, remote, ubiquitous access to company tools & data?)
3. What kinds of computing devices do you use? Work
devices, personal devices, etc. What do we need to know
about how you use your tablet or smartphone?
4. How would you rate your overall experience with
technology in your workplace?
5. How does your physical working space help your
productivity and focus?
TOOLS & ENVIRONMENT INQUIRY
3. PROCESS
1. How does the team collaborate on shared efforts/projects?
2. What are some of the key processes/workflows on our
team? Are they documented?
3. Are there any procedures or actions do you perform
repetitively that could possibly be automated? (When do
you find yourself saying, "There must be a better way.")
4. How do you and your colleagues keep track of your current,
agreed-upon way of working?
5. What are some of the primary inefficiencies you experience
or observe?
PROCESS INQUIRY
4. BEST WORK
1. What are some of the shared goals everyone is working
toward?
2. How do you feel those goals are connected to the work
you do day-to-day?
3. Describe the type of positive impact you're looking to
make for those you serve via your daily work and
responsibilities?
4. What areas of your own work would you like to learn
more about? * e.g. professional development, additional
skills, training, metrics
5. Are there any reports or metrics you are currently using to
understand your work or the work of your team?
BEST WORK INQUIRY
• Staff Interviews: Discuss values & business goals with leadership; survey
representational selection of staff to garner feedback and first-hand insights
• Tools & Environment Assessment: In situ survey of work environment &
business applications
• Process Analysis Deep Dives: Focused individual/group interviews or in situ
shadows to gain better understand complex project workflows
• Interim Reviews: Two meetings to discuss our understanding of the leading
issues, possible solutions and assign priorities
• Summary & Review of Findings: A detailed Discovery report which includes
our recommended solutions & path forward
• Team Recap Event: Review of Discovery highlights and discussion of the path
ahead.
TOOLS OF DISCOVERY
• Select your Champion
• Select your Discovery Team

ORDER OF OPERATIONS
1. Be ready to put in the time, and give your team permission todo the
same. Expect at least 3 hours for each employee that’s actively
involved.
2. You have to be prepared to follow though on at least some of what
you uncover, even if you won't be able to do it all immediately.
3. You've got to show that you really care about engagement—that
means taking actions quickly on things you can solve immediately.
4. Talk to everyone or at least a representative selection of all groups,
roles, departments.
5. Have open conversations, be inclusive, and show your work as
frequently as you can.
6. You have to be ready to hear difficult truths, to not freak out when
that happens, and to know to celebrate that people trust you enough
to share them.
