My passion for Speech Language Pathology developed later than most of my peers. I was naive
enough freshmen year to think that I could settle as a Psychology major. Thankfully, Speech
Pathology crossed right into my path at the most unforeseen moment. One introduction class was all
it took, I was hooked. I've been exposed to first–hand clinical experiences, job shadowing
opportunities, and professors who were so passionate about their job that they made me want to
experience the same thing. One experience in particular was my senior project. I successfully
implemented Naturalistic/play–based therapy to a four year old with Down syndrome, which
presented cognitive and developmental delays. The long–term goal was to increase his expressive

Working as a Personal Support Worker for a 23–year old male with Autism has been a rewarding
experience. Working in the mysterious world of autism has required me to think outside of the box,
and adapt to my client's unique way of life. In addition to my part–time work, volunteering as a 1st–
4th grade tutor has heightened my awareness regarding the reading and learning disabilities facing
our youth today. I've experienced first–hand just how crucial early detection is. Finally, from

That experience began when I shadowed on the cleft and craniofacial unit at John Hopkins
Children's Center. This experience was very enlightening allowing me to confirm and envisioned
myself in any aspect of the profession. This was the moment when speech therapy became one of
my interests in pursuing a career as a Speech–Language Pathologist. While I would like to
specialize in cleft palate, I am aware of the vast opportunities that the field of speech–language

Since Speech Therapy programs are not offered in Fiji, I would go there to help children, work with

As an eight year old student, I entered the annual science fair at school. The subject I chose to
observe and research for my project was the human vocal chords. Collectively, my mom, a speech
pathologist, and I sat down and watched videos that she had of her own vocal chords being activated

Through speech pathology, people are reached and shown compassion who are typically considered
outcasts in society. SLPs work with individuals who are struggling with various sets of problems
and help to solve those problems through undivided attention and spirits of patience and willingness
to aid people with speech, language, and mental impairments. I believe this would be a good career

While reading this article, I learned the brain acquires differently among children who are living in
the lower, middle, and upper classes. The cognitive functions, emotional development, and language
growth of individuals will be affected by those living in poverty. For example, a child's temper,

"The guidelines cover six general components: administrative structure and governance, academic

Personal Narrative: A Career In Speech-Language Pathology
When considering a career in speech–language pathology, it is important to get input from
individuals who have already been in the profession for many years. Upon talking with them, you
can learn more about how the field looks in the day–to–day functions and situations. For this

Not only do I desire to obtain a career in multiple disciplines in the field of speech language
pathology, but I also plan to create a vocation of my own. My goal is to create my own series of
activity books as well as own my own private practice. Also, I have a specific interest in voice and

college, the aspects of speech have become especially intriguing to me, not only because of in–class

For the past number of years, Ohio has taken a caseload approach. This means SLPs are allowed no
more than 80 students having IEPs on their caseload ("Caseload vs"). Larry Biehl, who is a
professional in this field, has been working on an approach to help minimize this problem of
caseload for six years. According to Larry, in the last ten to fifteen years the caseload number has
not changed, but job responsibilities have significantly increased due to IDEA (Individuals with

therapies are constantly being improved because of the influences of Swiss biologist Jean Piaget
(1896–1980) and Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1896–1934), who developed theories of

I use to stutter as a teen into my adulthood. Occasionally I still stutter which is considered to be
normal according to research. I enjoy attending NSA events in the hope of informing others that
they know are not alone. Society believes that individuals who stutter are not intelligent or there is a
