INTRODUCTION
• Computer based statistical packages are an important tool for
researcher in the Social science. Statistical software are specialized
programs designed to perform complex statistical analysis.
• They are the tools that assist in the organization, interpretation, and
presentation of selected data sets to provide science-based insights
into patterns and trends
• Statistical software use statistical analysis theorems and
methodologies such as regression analysis, time series analysis to
perform data sciences 2
DEFINITION, PURPOSES
Definition:
Statistical package is defined as the software used to collect,
organize, interpret and present numerical information.
Purpose:
• Statistical packages can be used for
-Analysis
-Data Manipulation
-Data Management
3
SELECTION OF STATISTICAL
PACKAGES
When choosing which package to use for Statistical analysis, a
number of factors must be considered These are
 The availability of a package
 Cost of the package
 Functions, a software can perform
 Familiarity with software
4
STATISTICAL PACKAGES
A number of statistical packages are available for
statistical analysis. The commonly used packages
are
 Statistical Packages for Social Science
 Microsoft Excel
 The R system
 The statistical Analysis System (SAS)
 Minitab
 Systat
 NCSS
 Stata etc.., 5
STATISTICALPACKAGESFOR SOCIALSCIENCES(SPSS)
• SPSS is power statistical software, which was
earlier known for its applications in social sciences
only. It is Windows based and shares all the facilities
with other Windows Applications
• Originally it is an acronym of Statistical Package
for the Social Science but now it stands for
Statistical Product and service solution. SPSS was
developed in 1960 at Stanford University to help
solve problems in the social sciences. It is the most
comprehensive and popular statistical packages.

STATISTICALPACKAGESFOR SOCIALSCIENCES (SPSS)
• In addition to its provisioning for the standard
procedures needed in descriptive statistics, it can
be provisioning for regression analysis and
Analysis of Variance(ANOVA).It is also capable
of multivariate analysis involving sophisticated
techniques, namely cluster analysis, time series
analysis etc.
• The product is also capable of determining
sample size and estimating power of a statistical
procedures

MERITS OF SPSS
• Easily opens data from other programs such as Excel and
SAS
• Variable view screen allows for quick overview of file
contents and allows for easy modifications of names,
formats, labels, and variable order.
• Having all data information in a single file allows sharing
files on a project to be very easy.
• It offers reliable and fast answers
• It’s dynamic and has useful tables and graphs

• Since it offers a wide variety of languages, a lot of
people can access
• Effective data management
• Doesn’t require a lot of effort to start using the
software
• Useful for both quantitative and qualitative data
• The chances of errors are little with SPSS
• One of the easiest statistical tools to analyze data
• SPSS users can select the graph type which matches
their data distribution requirement

LIMITATIONS
 Ease of doing data manipulation can sometimes lead to mistakes
as the program does not preclude inappropriate modifications to
the data.
 Matching feature requires exact match Duplicate records
generate warnings but can be marked in file
 Error logs are hard to interpret at times
 Incompleteness of menus means some options are only available
via syntax
 While the majority of output is saved as pivot tables allowing
great flexibility in modifying tables
 Output tables and graphs generally not done as well as Excel and
are harder to manipulate

BASIC OPERATIONS IN SPSS
• Variable Entry (adding or deleting a variable)
• Data Entry (adding or deleting the data)
• Saving the data
• Importing data from Excel file
• Checking the data entered
• Sorting the data
• Transforming the data

Statistical methods that can be leveraged in SPSS:
• Descriptive Statistics – It includes methodologies such as
cross-tabulation, frequencies, and descriptive ratio statistics.
• Bivariate Statistics – It includes methodologies such as means,
nonparametric tests, correlation, and Analysis of Variance
(ANOVA)
• Predicting numeral outcomes such as linear regression
• Methodologies such as cluster analysis and factor
analysis which is great for predicting for identifying groups

• Microsoft Excel is a very popular and useful spreadsheet program that
can be useful for data entry and analysis.
• It has the capacity to generate random numbers and can be used for
the computation of many statistical applications like computation of
mean, range, standard deviation, etc.
• It can also be used for relatively sophisticated work like computing
regression and ANOVA.
• It is used for generating graphs such as bar chart, pie chart, scattered
plots etc.

THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS SYSTEM (SAS)
 It is very comprehensive software developed by North Carolina State
University. This software is divided into many modules and its licensing is
flexible, based upon the need for functions.
 This system contains a very large variety of statistical methods and is the
software of choice for many major businesses, including the entire
pharmaceutical industry.
 SAS has also developed a PC SAS, which is compatible with the personnel
computer and has a user- friendly windows interface.
 An advantage of SAS is it’s capability to transport data files in various
formats and convert them to SAS data set without much effort.
STATISTICAL PACKAGES
14
MINITAB
 This is another statistical package designed to facilitate the teaching of
statistical methods by using computer.
 The Minitab is also very user-friendly product with well-designed
documentation facilities being widely used in educational institutions.
STATISTICAL PACKAGES
Stata
 Stata is statistical software designed in 1985 by StataCorp. It is ued by
researcher in economics, sociology, biomedicine and epidemiology. Stata is
offered in many licenses; for students to professional use.
 Stata helpful for descriptive and inferential statistical Analysis. 15
 Researchers frequently collect large quantities of
data, from surveys, experiments and other forms
of observation. A statistical computing package
provides a convenient means to store these data,
and derive descriptive and inferential statistics.
The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences
(SPSS) is a widely used general-purpose survey
analysis package, and hence a useful one to
master. It is necessary to allow some learning
time to become familiar with this package, and
annual license fees can be a disincentive
