Analysis of the wing
Analysis of the path and angles adopted by a grasshopper’s wings when opening and closing
The integration of the grasshopper wing analogue with the carapace analogue; the wing morphs to the contours of the carapace therefore
defining its shape
Conceptual drawings of proposed design incorporating the analogue
The analogue explores the structural qualities of the wings and the body of the locust; looking at the
interstitial spaces between the three ‘layers’ (carapace, lower wing and upper wing) and how they
interact with each other. It is inspired by the textural and structural variances that compose the intri-
cately beautiful and unparalleled functional qualities of the locust; it’s strong carapace whose curva-
ture form translates to the form of the wings that fold seamlessly over the body, and the tensile
strength of the wings despite their delicate materiality.

Articulating a view
University of Pennsylvania
ARCH 202 Visualisation II: Fabrication
Fall 2013
The aim of this project was to articulate a certain view of the Schuylkill River site through the means of approach and experience
influenced by visual and physical stimulation. In a site where most of the traffic is through traffic I felt it was necessary to provide an
opportunity for repose to experience the unique environment of the Schuylkill Park. Both phases of the project took inspiration from
the flow of the river water and the different effects it has on light, shadow and form. In particular its dynamic and perpetual movement
carving its individual path adapting to changes in the environment. You will never see the same river twice, just as you will never
experience the same view twice despite a constant physical framework.

Framing a view, Schuylkill River project site, conclusive design drawings, and analysis studies of the folding angles and their subsequent visual patterns
A further elaboration on framing a view to form an immersed observation platform in the Schuylkill River - process models and conceptual drawings of the ultimate design construction
Conceptual drawings of the ultimate design for an immersed observation deck in the Schuylkill River
The design encourages pensive thought in a bustling urban fabric. The vanes could spin with the current of the river and the swell of the waves captivating the viewer and enhancing a simple viewing platform to have a sculptural quality. The specifications of the design were
centred around capturing and measuring a particular quality of the site. In this case the rise and ebb of the river flow was the focus. The project would be cantilevered into the water and ‘attach’ to the land allowing for close interaction but still maintaining a sense of separa-
tion from the water itself. By using a web of interlocking pipes the structure is lighter but still sturdy and has little interference with the natural current of the water compared to a solid mass. The detached part circles framing the vanes are stationary to allow the changing
depth of the river to be studied. The height of the circles is established from the average depth of the river, that way the distance above or below the control point can determine the flux in river depth.

This project focused on digital design through parametric equations and grid principles. The forms generated originated from simple geometry manipulated by repetitive scripting. Starting from
singular shapes and 2 dimensional grids the project transcribed the qualities to 3d modeling. Different iterations experimented with various negative and positive spacial configurations, and
explored the possibilities of duality in the forms generated.
The parametric design of a ceramist's studio and showroom in Hawthorn Park, Philadelphia. Given an empty plot in a rapidly evolving historic neighbourhood of Philadelphia the design
proposes to integrate and articulate this rich history by highlighting specific views such as the recently renovated iconic park where Martin Luther rallied and the distinctive skyline of central
Philadelphia visible above the bordering residential housing. By incorporating characteristics from the immediate architecture such as the mural on the south wall of the plot, and the high
ceilings of the local church the project will relate to its site yet by using modern materials like glass, and a distinctive design the project will standout adding to the rich narrative written in the
urban fabric of the neighbourhood. The predominant material is conceptulised as glass to create a visually transparent and honest appeal, it would also reflect the adjacent architecture
depending on the ambient light and further integrate the new building. The vision is to provide both a visually simulating yet cohesive showroom that invites interaction both personally and
environmentally.

Francisville is a historic neighbourhood with a diverse population. The architecture embodies the changing time-frame and the juxtaposition of residential, commercial and institutional infrastructure. Edges and divisions of the neighbourhood, both physical and psychological,
slice through the urban fabric creating micro regions within the whole. The goal of this project is to connect these different regions and create transitions that encourage footfall from the busy commercial node of Broad Street and Gerard Avenue, to the more desolate areas
near the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Gerard Avenue.
Urban Community Market
Loos describes the “medium in which the true architect works as space, a full three-dimen-
sional and unlimited commodity which can nevertheless be manipulated in a variety of
ways to produce a poetic and moving human experience.” This project is designed to be a
volume, not a mass, have regularity, not symmetry, and no ornament. Instead it is a
dynamic, industrially inspired, multipurpose market designed to engage the community.
The aesthetic is open and welcoming with high ceilings, transparent walls, and a skeletal
infrastructure. By creating multiple levels various themes are incorporated into the form 1) it
maximises the space in a very densely built area whilst still giving the aesthetic of open
space with high ceilings and visually permeable materials, 2) it draws on the vertical char-
acter of the surrounding row homes, and 3) allows for multipurpose buildings that can
interact with the community in a variety of ways. The angles and spacial configuration is
designed to take advantage of the stimulating views of the surrounding city, and integrate
into the urban fabric. The key themes in the project could be described as permeability and
duality. The design is proposed to be a significant landmark without segregating itself from
the existing character of the neighbourhood.

Covered urban market, Francisville project site, proposed green space in context
The green space is a dynamic network of circulation with the proposal to include seating for repose and a modern, nature inspired water feature to the top East corner. The green space is designed not necessarily a destination but more of a
path with opportunities to linger.

Looking at an aerial view of Athens one can clearly see the shape of the basin and the mountains that form her
boundaries. The mountains themselves provide the base from which the profile of the cityscape is dictated. As
the population of Athens increased the city spread towards the edges of the basin following the contours of the
land. The air flow over this surrounding ring of mountains causes clouds to be formed in an almost inverted
outline of the city. Thus, giving three distinct yet integrated layers; mountains, city and clouds.
Intrigued by the relationship between mountains, city and clouds this project explores the similarities within their
formation and their individual qualities to create a design that unifies the three landscapes. The design of the
installation developed into a project of topography; highlighting their dynamic forms and the separate parts that
form the overall structure.
Initial discussions considered how changes in time and culture altered the perspective of the landscape. The
tri-system is made up of modules that reveal and obscure certain parts of Athens based on the actions and
reactions to changes in the environment. These responses form patterns and over time, layers of habitation
that create the rhythm and tempo of the topography. The project analyses these layers and their relationship to
the formation of Athens.
The installation itself consists of multiple layers and fragments that viewed together form a unified landscape.
The highest points of the surrounding basin of mountains were used to articulate the boundary of Athens.
Then, using the contours of the land we created a reduced mesh and extrapolated the height of each point.
Certain landmarks such as the Acropolis were given significance by increasing the density of points; a physical
representation of how cities form in clusters with populations congregating in the most important areas. A linen
cloth was draped over the rods and molded to the shape of the mountains to create an abstraction of the
topography.
Arthur Boyd Art Gallery Conception and House Renovation
Riversdale, Australia
Glenn Murcutt Master Class
Summer 2015
The proposal of this project aimed to reimagine the existing Boyd houses and incorporate them into an art
gallery to exhibit the Australian artist’s magnificent work. The proposed design captures the duality and expres-
sive collaboration between the natural and man-made found in Boyd’s masterpieces. Boyd was fascinated by
the human psyche and most of his works are emotional and mentally invigorating, yet he found peace in Riv-
ersdale in the massive expanse of the mountains and unruly landscape. Creating a design with minimal struc-
tural impact but a strong relationship with the site and surrounding environment allows the paintings to be the
focus accompanied by the surrounding natural context. Using natural materials to make a homogenous system
allows the gallery to be manipulated depending on the exhibit and the qualities that the curator wants to high-
light from the surroundings. Natural dances across the paintings and reflects from the water pool, with the large
windows framing the mountains the natural landscape is brought into the gallery. Traversing through the gallery
you move from the solid earth surrounds of the dugout offices and performance space to the floating pier of the
end of the gallery where you reach out to the incoming river.

“Civic spaces are an extension of the community. When they work well, they serve as a stage for our public lives. If
they function in their true civic role, they can be the settings where celebrations are held, where social and economic
exchanges take place, where friends run into each other, and where cultures mix.”
We are designing not only a girls’ school and hospital, but also a place to bring people together with architecture. The
design’s civic spaces serve as an extension of the community, fostering communal gathering. These civic spaces blur
the lines between the micro-communities within the campus, as well as between outside communities. Just as the
main path connects Tarkwa Breman to other communities, it will also lead people to civic spaces.
Strongly rooted in geometry, this design utilises the curve to encourage the coming together of different peoples.
While a perfect circle is relatively easy to construct, it is uniform and non-directional. Thus, we have designed circular
plinths upon which buildings can rest. Ellipses, however, help filter people into civic spaces by pointing users in
specific directions. This filtering is then enhanced by deliberate landscaping. Furthermore, outdoor spaces are divided
between civic spaces, which are accessible to the public, and private courtyards, which are available to select users
upon entering certain spaces.
The design responds to its climate and cultural environment. It uses local durable materials, such as bamboo, dwell
earth blocks, corrugated iron roofing, and fabric. Whilst it modular building system makes this design easy to repeat in
different locations with small adjustment to cater to different topographies or purposes.
The deigns proposes an integrated community but accommodates a specilised form of education that relates to both
their culture and expanding the girls’ livelihood and education.

  • 4. The integration of the grasshopper wing analogue with the carapace analogue; the wing morphs to the contours of the carapace therefore defining its shape Conceptual drawings of proposed design incorporating the analogue The analogue explores the structural qualities of the wings and the body of the locust; looking at the interstitial spaces between the three ‘layers’ (carapace, lower wing and upper wing) and how they interact with each other. It is inspired by the textural and structural variances that compose the intri- cately beautiful and unparalleled functional qualities of the locust; it’s strong carapace whose curva- ture form translates to the form of the wings that fold seamlessly over the body, and the tensile strength of the wings despite their delicate materiality.

  • 8. The aim of this project was to articulate a certain view of the Schuylkill River site through the means of approach and experience influenced by visual and physical stimulation. In a site where most of the traffic is through traffic I felt it was necessary to provide an opportunity for repose to experience the unique environment of the Schuylkill Park. Both phases of the project took inspiration from the flow of the river water and the different effects it has on light, shadow and form. In particular its dynamic and perpetual movement carving its individual path adapting to changes in the environment. You will never see the same river twice, just as you will never experience the same view twice despite a constant physical framework.

  • 11. A further elaboration on framing a view to form an immersed observation platform in the Schuylkill River - process models and conceptual drawings of the ultimate design construction
  • 12. Conceptual drawings of the ultimate design for an immersed observation deck in the Schuylkill River The design encourages pensive thought in a bustling urban fabric. The vanes could spin with the current of the river and the swell of the waves captivating the viewer and enhancing a simple viewing platform to have a sculptural quality. The specifications of the design were centred around capturing and measuring a particular quality of the site. In this case the rise and ebb of the river flow was the focus. The project would be cantilevered into the water and ‘attach’ to the land allowing for close interaction but still maintaining a sense of separa- tion from the water itself. By using a web of interlocking pipes the structure is lighter but still sturdy and has little interference with the natural current of the water compared to a solid mass. The detached part circles framing the vanes are stationary to allow the changing depth of the river to be studied. The height of the circles is established from the average depth of the river, that way the distance above or below the control point can determine the flux in river depth.

  • 14. Rib R3b R4b R5b R6b R7b R6b R2b E2b R2b E1b E1b This project focused on digital design through parametric equations and grid principles. The forms generated originated from simple geometry manipulated by repetitive scripting. Starting from singular shapes and 2 dimensional grids the project transcribed the qualities to 3d modeling. Different iterations experimented with various negative and positive spacial configurations, and explored the possibilities of duality in the forms generated.
  • 15. The parametric design of a ceramist's studio and showroom in Hawthorn Park, Philadelphia. Given an empty plot in a rapidly evolving historic neighbourhood of Philadelphia the design proposes to integrate and articulate this rich history by highlighting specific views such as the recently renovated iconic park where Martin Luther rallied and the distinctive skyline of central Philadelphia visible above the bordering residential housing. By incorporating characteristics from the immediate architecture such as the mural on the south wall of the plot, and the high ceilings of the local church the project will relate to its site yet by using modern materials like glass, and a distinctive design the project will standout adding to the rich narrative written in the urban fabric of the neighbourhood. The predominant material is conceptulised as glass to create a visually transparent and honest appeal, it would also reflect the adjacent architecture depending on the ambient light and further integrate the new building. The vision is to provide both a visually simulating yet cohesive showroom that invites interaction both personally and environmentally. Bespoke artisan’s studio and gallery

Inner boundary Primary roads and zoning of intervention area Urban fabric Vehicle Circulation Vacant but private space Existing Mass in intervention area Green Space Proposed Area of Intervention Existing Mass Existing Parking Existing Mass facades effected Secondary Phase of Intervention Primary Phase of Intervention Tertiary Phase of intervention Francisville is a historic neighbourhood with a diverse population. The architecture embodies the changing time-frame and the juxtaposition of residential, commercial and institutional infrastructure. Edges and divisions of the neighbourhood, both physical and psychological, slice through the urban fabric creating micro regions within the whole. The goal of this project is to connect these different regions and create transitions that encourage footfall from the busy commercial node of Broad Street and Gerard Avenue, to the more desolate areas near the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Gerard Avenue.
  • 20. Urban Community Market Loos describes the “medium in which the true architect works as space, a full three-dimen- sional and unlimited commodity which can nevertheless be manipulated in a variety of ways to produce a poetic and moving human experience.” This project is designed to be a volume, not a mass, have regularity, not symmetry, and no ornament. Instead it is a dynamic, industrially inspired, multipurpose market designed to engage the community. The aesthetic is open and welcoming with high ceilings, transparent walls, and a skeletal infrastructure. By creating multiple levels various themes are incorporated into the form 1) it maximises the space in a very densely built area whilst still giving the aesthetic of open space with high ceilings and visually permeable materials, 2) it draws on the vertical char- acter of the surrounding row homes, and 3) allows for multipurpose buildings that can interact with the community in a variety of ways. The angles and spacial configuration is designed to take advantage of the stimulating views of the surrounding city, and integrate into the urban fabric. The key themes in the project could be described as permeability and duality. The design is proposed to be a significant landmark without segregating itself from the existing character of the neighbourhood.

Covered urban market, Francisville project site, proposed circulation pattern Covered urban market, Francisville project site, proposed green space in context The green space is a dynamic network of circulation with the proposal to include seating for repose and a modern, nature inspired water feature to the top East corner. The green space is designed not necessarily a destination but more of a path with opportunities to linger.

see the shape of the basin and the mountains that form her boundaries. The mountains themselves provide the base from which the profile of the cityscape is dictated. As the population of Athens increased the city spread towards the edges of the basin following the contours of the land. The air flow over this surrounding ring of mountains causes clouds to be formed in an almost inverted outline of the city. Thus, giving three distinct yet integrated layers; mountains, city and clouds. Intrigued by the relationship between mountains, city and clouds this project explores the similarities within their formation and their individual qualities to create a design that unifies the three landscapes. The design of the installation developed into a project of topography; highlighting their dynamic forms and the separate parts that form the overall structure. Initial discussions considered how changes in time and culture altered the perspective of the landscape. The tri-system is made up of modules that reveal and obscure certain parts of Athens based on the actions and reactions to changes in the environment. These responses form patterns and over time, layers of habitation that create the rhythm and tempo of the topography. The project analyses these layers and their relationship to the formation of Athens. The installation itself consists of multiple layers and fragments that viewed together form a unified landscape. The highest points of the surrounding basin of mountains were used to articulate the boundary of Athens. Then, using the contours of the land we created a reduced mesh and extrapolated the height of each point. Certain landmarks such as the Acropolis were given significance by increasing the density of points; a physical representation of how cities form in clusters with populations congregating in the most important areas. A linen cloth was draped over the rods and molded to the shape of the mountains to create an abstraction of the topography.

  • 26. The proposal of this project aimed to reimagine the existing Boyd houses and incorporate them into an art gallery to exhibit the Australian artist’s magnificent work. The proposed design captures the duality and expres- sive collaboration between the natural and man-made found in Boyd’s masterpieces. Boyd was fascinated by the human psyche and most of his works are emotional and mentally invigorating, yet he found peace in Riv- ersdale in the massive expanse of the mountains and unruly landscape. Creating a design with minimal struc- tural impact but a strong relationship with the site and surrounding environment allows the paintings to be the focus accompanied by the surrounding natural context. Using natural materials to make a homogenous system allows the gallery to be manipulated depending on the exhibit and the qualities that the curator wants to high- light from the surroundings. Natural dances across the paintings and reflects from the water pool, with the large windows framing the mountains the natural landscape is brought into the gallery. Traversing through the gallery you move from the solid earth surrounds of the dugout offices and performance space to the floating pier of the end of the gallery where you reach out to the incoming river.

If they function in their true civic role, they can be the settings where celebrations are held, where social and economic exchanges take place, where friends run into each other, and where cultures mix.” We are designing not only a girls’ school and hospital, but also a place to bring people together with architecture. The design’s civic spaces serve as an extension of the community, fostering communal gathering. These civic spaces blur the lines between the micro-communities within the campus, as well as between outside communities. Just as the main path connects Tarkwa Breman to other communities, it will also lead people to civic spaces. Strongly rooted in geometry, this design utilises the curve to encourage the coming together of different peoples. While a perfect circle is relatively easy to construct, it is uniform and non-directional. Thus, we have designed circular plinths upon which buildings can rest. Ellipses, however, help filter people into civic spaces by pointing users in specific directions. This filtering is then enhanced by deliberate landscaping. Furthermore, outdoor spaces are divided between civic spaces, which are accessible to the public, and private courtyards, which are available to select users upon entering certain spaces. The design responds to its climate and cultural environment. It uses local durable materials, such as bamboo, dwell earth blocks, corrugated iron roofing, and fabric. Whilst it modular building system makes this design easy to repeat in different locations with small adjustment to cater to different topographies or purposes. The deigns proposes an integrated community but accommodates a specilised form of education that relates to both their culture and expanding the girls’ livelihood and education.
