Your Special Town Abby Baker 11/30/09
Indicator Economics 3.4.1 Give examples from the local community that illustrate the scarcity of productive resources and will explain how this scarcity requires people to make choices and incur opportunity costs. http://dc.doe.in.gov/Standards/AcademicStandards/StandardSearch.aspx
Objectives The students will: Discuss the special qualities of their home town Draw pictures of their home town and compare each other’s drawings to gain an understanding of what the children think is unique and special about their town. Create a presentation that could be used to welcome visitors to their town.
Questions to Ponder… Where do you live? What is special about the town you live in? As a class, record the answers on the board and compare/contrast the different responses.
Consider a special spot in your town that is special to you. When you talk about your town, what comes to mind? What types of people, buildings, and landscapes do you see? Now, draw what you see…
Each student will have a different and unique drawing. Allow the students to explain their drawing while we share the drawings with the class. Keep these questions in mind: Did most students include the same features? Did all of the pictures look the same? What was similar and different?
Just Imagine… A family from California is planning a vacation to Southern Indiana. They are trying to decide which town to visit. Your job is to persuade the family to come to Evansville. (You may work in small groups of 2 or 3.) This is can be done as a presentation or paper. Why should they come to Evansville? What restaurants are there in Evansville? What attractions might they be interested in? These are just some questions to help you get started!
