Status asthmaticus is a life-threatening form of asthma that is unresponsive to usual therapy. It is caused by severe bronchospasm, inflammation, and mucus production, resulting in increased airway resistance and collapse. Clinical features include dyspnea, tachycardia, and hypoxia. Treatment involves high-dose nebulized bronchodilators, steroids, magnesium sulfate, and intravenous salbutamol and aminophylline if unresponsive. Close monitoring is needed and mechanical ventilation may be required if the condition worsens. Prognosis is good with aggressive treatment but status asthmaticus carries a risk of mortality and readmission.
