- 3. Steve Irwin was born on February 22, 1962 in Fern Tree Gully, Victoria. Steve grew up loving wildlife, especially reptiles. He would often get home late because he would go out of his way to move reptiles off the road. At the age of six he caught his first poisonous snake, a Common Brown Snake.
- 4. In 1970 his family moved to Beerwah, Queensland. His dad was the one who influenced Steve to be a wildlife expert. They founded the Fauna Park after they moved. When he was 9 year old, he helped his dad catch small crocodiles. Beerwah
- 5. People said he had a 6th sense for wildlife; Steve Irwin spent his whole life discovering this skill. In the 1980’s he spent his time catching big, adult crocodiles before they got shot by poachers.
- 6. In 1991 he met Terri Rains and immediately fell for her. On June 4, 1992 they got married. Instead of a honeymoon, they produced a reptile documentary with John Stainton. In July, 2006, he made a ten-year business plan for his zoo, not knowing he would pass away two months later.

- 9. Steve Irwin didn’t just discover ways to help wildlife; he discovered new animals in the wildlife. Probably his most famous discovery was the Elseyairwini, a turtle he founded in the early 80’s while he and his dad were looking for crocodiles. He was looking out in the river bank when he saw something unfamiliar. As usual, he jumped into the bank of the river and caught this turtle.
- 10. One of Steve’s achievements was to influence people to preserve wildlife. One example is the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve (SIWR). This reserve was named after him as a tribute to his life endeavors. The SIWR was founded to conserve wildlife. The reserve is a wetland conservation property. That means he influenced people to help the wildlife.
- 11. Steve Irwin is called The Crocodile Hunter. Most people know Steve by his trapping of crocodiles. He took part in the Crocodile Relocation Program, trapping crocodiles that had come too close to people. He either transferred them to more appropriate places or to the family park. Later, he became the director of the Australia Zoo, which was the name he gave his family’s park after his parents retired in 1991. However, it was his film and television work that made him famous.
- 12. Steve Irwin is best known for his television series, The Crocodile Hunter. It was very popular because of the enthusiasm he showed during the shows. He co-hosted the documentary with his wife, Terri. The show ran from 19972004.
- 13. The other television series Steve did were Croc Files, The Crocodile Hunter Diaries, The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, Ocean’s Deadliest, and Bindi The Jungle Girl. In his shows, he would either teach you about a species or he would show you how to catch dangerous animals.
- 14. Steve Irwin’s discoveries changed the way we view the world in many ways. He influenced us to respect wildlife, follow our passion, and to take action whenever we can. This can make us all better people, just like him.

- 18. Sadly, Steve Irwin passed away September 4, 2006. The way he died was because a black stingray had punctured his heart while he was filming a documentary, Ocean’s Deadliest. The camera man soon figured out what was happening and immediately stopped the video. Once word got out, the whole country grieved. Everywhere the flag was brought down to half mast. R.I.P.
