The lymphatic system functions to (1) protect the body against infection by activating the immune system, (2) collect and return tissue fluids and other molecules to the circulatory system, and (3) absorb fat from the small intestine. It consists of lymph vessels, lymph nodes, and organs like the spleen and thymus. Lymph flows in one direction via lymph vessels towards the heart, moved by muscle contractions, and is filtered by lymph nodes before returning to blood circulation.
