- 2. MEETING OF THE ESTATES-GENERAL The first estate was made up of Clergy. The second estate was made up of government and military positions. The third estate was made up of Artisans, Bourgeoisie, Doctors, Lawyers, and peasants. The first and second estate didn’t pay taxes at all, and the third estate was forced to pay all the taxes. The third estate wanted to meet all together, but the first and second estates met with each other and the king. The king, wanted new taxes on the first and second estates, but the nobles wanted to protect their privileges, weaken royal power, and to control the government.
- 3. ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY Created on 17 th of June 1789 The King wanted all the estates to meet separately. But, with the meeting of the National Assembly, all estates met together, and had individual votes.
- 4. TENNIS COURT OATH The members of the third estate were locked out of the Estates-General, So they met on a tennis court. They took an oath, that they would not disband until they had written a constitution for France. The Oath had taken place on June 20, 1789.
- 5. STORMING OF THE BASTILLE Bastille was a Prison. The storming of the Bastille was the first violent act of the revolution. It caused reforms to be made. It symbolized an attack on inequality, an attack on injustice, and, an attack on the the king.
