WHAT IS STROKE?
 A stroke is a "brain attack". It can happen to anyone at any time. It
occurs when blood flow to an area of brain is cut off. When this
happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. When
brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the
brain such as memory and muscle control are lost.
HISTORY OF STROKE
 While the name described the sudden changes that can occur with
a stroke, it didn't necessarily convey what is actually happening in the
brain. Centuries later, in the 1600s, doctor
named Jacob Wepfer discovered that something disrupted the blood
supply in the brains of people who died from apoplexy.

TYPES OF STROKE
 A hemorrhagic stroke is either a
brain aneurysm burst or a
weakened blood vessel leak.
When a vessel break in specific
area of brain.
 Ischemic stroke is the most
common type. It is usually
caused by a blood clot that
blocks or plugs a blood vessel in
the brain. This keeps blood from
flowing to the brain. Within
minutes, brain cells begin to die.
Another cause is stenosis, or
narrowing of the artery.

PREVALENCE IN PAKISTAN
 Stroke is the most common cause of disability and a leading cause of
mortality world wide. Similarly every 3rd person above age of 45
years has hypertension.
 Burden of stroke risk factors in Pakistan is enormous by 2020
Pakistan will be 4th mo.st populous country.
RATIO IN MEN AND WOMEN
 Men Ratio
 40%
 Cause
 Smoking
 Other factors
 Women
 85%
 Cause
 Estrogen
 When estrogen levels decline, levels of
LDL cholesterol (the harmful kind)
increase, and levels of
HDL cholesterol (the positive kind)
decrease, leading to the build up of fat
and cholesterol in the arteries that
contributes to heart attack and stroke.
TREATMENT
 Infrared radiation
 Tens
 Rotator
