This document summarizes structural engineering and architectural styles from 500-1500 AD. It describes Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic architectural periods following the fall of Rome. Byzantine architecture used central domes and mosaic decoration. Romanesque architecture evolved barrel and groin vaults with rounded arches. Gothic architecture developed pointed arches, rib vaulting, flying buttresses, and stained glass windows. The Renaissance style followed, using semicircular vaults and columns as an integrated system. Bridge building also progressed with the development of the pointed arch during this medieval period.
