Contents
• The skin is the largest organ of the body, made of water,
protein, fats and minerals.
• It’s a primary protective organ, covering its entire external
surface and serving as a first-order physical barrier against the
environment.
• Skin is the outermost layer of Body organ.
• The surface area is about 1.5 to 2cm (square)
• The weight of skin is 4kg.
• Its functions include
• Temperature regulation and protection against - ultraviolet
(UV) light, trauma, pathogens, microorganisms, and toxins.
INTRODUCTION
Structure of Skin
Layers of Skin
1. Epidermis :
The epidermis is the most superficial layer of the skin and
provides the first barrier of protection from the invasion of
substances into the body.
It’s made up of Stratified squamous epithelial cells.
It contain no blood vessels.
The epidermis is subdivided into five layers or strata:
• Stratum basale
• Stratum spinosum
• Stratum granulosum
• Stratum lucidum and stratum corneum
• Middle layer that Contains nerves, sweat glands, Oil glands,
hair roots and blood vessels.
• It lies between epidermis and subcutaneous layer and contain
many types of sensory receptors for touch , pressure,
temperature, Vibration, pain...
• Types of cells located in dermis :- fibroblasts, mast cells ,
Histocytes, hair follicles, lymphatic vessels...
Two types:
A) Papillary
B) Reticular
2.Dermis
• Deep to skin , also known as subcutaneous tissue, consists of
loose connective tissue with collagen and elastic fibres
• Help to maintain body temperature
• Main type of cells present : Fibroblasts, adipose tissue and
macrophages
3. Hypodermis
• Prickly heat also known as Heat Rash or miliaria, is a skin
condition that occurs due to excessive sweatning in hot and
humid whether.
• Happened when sweat glands blocked lead to itchy ,red or
prickly rashes .
• Miliaria occurs in some people when they sweat a lot.
• It can be very itchy.
• It is due to a blockage of the sweat ducts which causes sweat
to seep into the skin cells.
Prickly Heat
• Itching
• Prickling
• Small bumps or blisters
• Large red areas of skin
• Mild swelling
• Small, raised spots
• Deep, inflamed lumps
Symptoms
Description: The mildest form, affecting the outermost layer of
the skin (stratum corneum) also called sudamina.
Causes: Sweat is trapped just under the skin, forming tiny
blisters.
Symptoms:
Small, clear, fluid-filled blisters (vesicles). No redness, pain, or
inflammation.
Common in newborns and people exposed to excessive heat.
Treatment: Keep skin cool and dry.
Avoid excessive sweating.Use loose, breathable clothing.
Types of prickly heat
1. Miliaria Crystallina (Superficial Blockage)
Description:
The most common form, affecting the deeper epidermis.
Causes: Prolonged sweating blocks sweat ducts, causing
inflammation.
Symptoms: Red, itchy, inflamed bumps (papules).
A prickling or burning Sensation. Common in body folds (neck,
chest, back, underarms, groin).
Worsens with continued sweating.
Treatment: Move to a cool, dry environment
Apply calamine lotion or anti-itch creams
Take cool showers and use mild soaps.
Wear light, loose-fitting clothes.
2. Miliaria Rubra (Common Prickly Heat)
• Heat rash happens when the ducts beneath your skin
that transport your sweat get clogged up.
• The sweat can't get through the pores in your skin,
and it causes your skin to get irritated.
• Then a rash develops.
• This is most often caused by:
• Small pieces of dead skin cells getting trapped in your
pores
• Sweat collecting between your skin and your clothing
• Hair follicles blocking your sweat glands
Causes
• Cool your body in an air-conditioned room or with a
fan
• Take a cool shower or bath and let your skin air-dry
• Wear fewer layers of clothing
• Wear loose clothing that allows airflow
• Choose cotton fabrics, which are more breathable
• Don't scratch your skin, or it could become infected
• Keep your skin dry
• Try an anti-itch cream like calamine lotion
