- 4. Welcome to Lakehead University Welcome back to the Honours Bachelor of Education Program. I know that leaving the familiar surroundings of your home community and your friends and family is often challenging. I hope that you agree with me that the benefits of attending the HBEd program will make all your sacrifices worthwhile. We have an excellent Aboriginal Program Coordinator, Ms. Judy Flett, who has been working hard all year long to prepare the program for students when they arrive. Judy has prepared a valuable information brochure that will help you during your stay here, and is here to provide you with assistance during your studies. We also have excellent instructors who will be working with you in your teaching and learning experiences. Our program is designed to provide students with the training and the expertise they need in order to be highly successful in their teaching careers. Our focus on Aboriginal Education enables program graduates to meet the needs of all learners. Thunder Bay and the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University have a lot to offer you. - 5. Welcome to H.B.Ed. Students from Matawa First Nations It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2011 Summer Session of Lakehead University’s Honours Bachelor of Education program. All of us at Matawa First Nations recognize the hard work required to be successful in the program, and your dedication in pursuing your educational dreams. For some of you, this is a new experience as you begin your journey toward obtaining your formal teacher certification. For those of you entering your third session of summer courses, you are the “veterans” who have been with the program since its beginning. We hope you will be mentors to those who are beginning their studies this July and August, and that you will share with them your experience and knowledge. Take this opportunity to grow your professional relationships over the next few weeks – they will be an important part of your life as a teacher. This is an exciting time for our Matawa First Nation communities. As new opportunities are created, the need for trained, educated people has never been greater. Education is a critical component in building strong, healthy communities, and as teachers you are the key to unlocking the potential in our future leaders, entrepreneurs, technicians, professionals, and community members. You will have busy schedules, but we invite you to visit our offices while you are in Thunder Bay. Our Education Department has moved to new offices on the first floor, where you will also be able to see our new Matawa Learning Centre and meet the staff of the PASS! program who will be visiting your schools in the near future. I honour your sacrifice and assure you that we in the Department of Aboriginal Education at Lakehead University will do everything in our power to support your learning journey. I urge you to work hard and to build a professional learning community that will support you over the rough spots. Take advantage of the support mechanisms available to you and make sure you deal with problems as they arise. It is not a weakness to ask for assistance but a strength that can often make a significant difference in your experience. - 15. Library Information The libraries at Lakehead University are the heart of the campus. The Chancellor Paterson Library is the main library for the university. The Education Library is in the Bora Laskin Building and caters primarily to the needs of Education students. There are also the Orillia libraries on the Orillia campus. Together these libraries provide access to over 390,000 book titles, over 20,000 e-journals, over 2,400 print and microform subscriptions, and over 500,000 microform titles. Most of the e-resources (such as journal indexes, e-journals, and e-books) are accessible from off-campus. It is also possible to view your patron record, renew items, and place items on hold from home. The library also provides services such as computers, wireless access, printing, and photocopying.
