Student performance evaluation




The trend in education today is performance-based which also needs performance-based
assessment to evaluate the task given to students in the classroom. It is a challenge to the
teachers to provide lessons or topics with the purpose of completing an assigned task for
evaluation. Evaluation tools are varied but recently, the most viable one in use is the
rubrics.

Performance-based tasks are given to students to achieve the outcome of learning. These
tasks are set to evaluate their skills in communication like reading, writing, listening and
speaking; or checking their psychomotor skills like interpretative dancing and singing,
drawing, sketching and other physical tasks which require their physical abilities to be
utilized. The use of rubrics is very effective in assessing these skills because it provides
valuable information whether the student has achieved a learning outcome based on the
standard of set criteria.

Rubrics are very useful assessment tools because it targets performance-based task as a
learning outcome. The criteria being laid down for assessment is based on standard even
though modifications are made for different kinds of learning task to be done.

The criteria are worded as narrative descriptions that are classified into levels of
performance related to the learning task. From the highest level going to the lowest level
of performance, the tasks are assessed according to the defined tasks a student was able to
perform. Each level is assigned a proficiency value for the student performance which
can be a progressive numerical and qualitative scale or a combination of the two.

Factors to be considered in formulating effective rubrics (along with 6 traits writing ) is
the use of clear and concise criteria to assess the task given to students based on observed
performance. This is a fair and justifiable way of assessing students because the
performance is directly observable and the grading is on site. Students should be
informed of the criteria as they are held accountable of the outcome of the assessment.

Because rubrics are considered to be effective tools in the assessment of performance-
based task, the role of the teachers with the help of the students is the formulation of
workable rubrics to connect teaching and learning which serve as a challenge to students
to work towards higher levels of achievement.
