- 7. 7 HYENA January 2014 - May 2015 There were two parts to this project: the platform and the apps. The platform was built because we needed a way to quickly prototype apps that were able to connect to UNL’s CAS authentication system, connect NUIDs to Blackboard usernames, and have a consistent, polished UI. On top of that platform we built a range of apps that help RSOs/Departments to track student engagement instead of using the old pen and paper. The platform allowed us to, with one command, scaffold out 60% of an app’s code and interface, vastly reducing development time. - 9. 9 DENTISTRY RESEARCH May Two professors in the college of dentistry we conducting research on the effects of crowns on the surface area of teeth. The researchers requested a solution to finding the surface are of the teeth before and after the crown. Student Technology was able to create a work flow using multiple softwares in order to help them with their research ad get measurements to the level of detail the research required. - 11. 11 INTERIOR DESIGN TUTORIALS May-July Interior Design Professors approached Student Technology and asked if tutorials could be created for their courses. The tutorials cover rendering, Photoshop Skills, and Revit Software. The tutorials were created as online videos that the students could watch at their convenience or that the professors could show during class. We were also able to host some videos for the class alongside the tutorials we created to create on place for the students to go for help. - 13. 13 DIGITAL HUMANITIES CLASS PROJECTS Spring 2015 Technology changes rapidly which makes keeping up with learning technology challenging for students. Students would seek help from us having different contexts of their current project, and different levels of previous experience using the technology. To meet their unique needs we offered personalized advice about technology and worked closely with them as they were learning and working on their projects. In addition to showing students how to use technology, we also helped them understand how to ask better questions so they could find the answers they need faster and more efficiently. This is important particularly with complex technologies such as those used in web design and development. Web development may be easy to grasp as a concept, but it is much more challenging in practice. With a series of guided learn- by-searching sessions and 1-on-1 tech advice about web technologies such as PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, we enabled students to apply these technologies to their web design and development projects. - 15. 15 STUDIO : LEARNING ON DEMAND LESSONS - April Studio is a compilation of tutorials and lessons that show students step by step how to use various softwares they may need for their projects. It is a platform that students can navigate on their own if they need help with a specific technology tool. - 17. 17 SOFTWARE ENGINEERING DESIGN WORKSHOP February Two part design workshop for a Software Engineering class. We covered the basics of designing user interfaces by working on some example problems, and also worked on one of the class assignments. - 19. 19 SCANNER + KIOSK December-March This project came to be from the interest in checking students into our online tracking system. We originally tried using RFID technology to track the NFC chips on student’s ncards. After figuring out that the NFC chips were under a restricted code, we looked for other options for reading these cards. We decided on using the bar code on the cards to scan students into the system. After testing, and a couple prototypes, we advanced into our latest prototype. This prototype is equipped with a wireless hand-held scanner to scan ncards and a base that houses an iPad. The iPad receives the data via bluetooth from the hand-held scanner. The hand-held scanner charges wirelessly between two charging solenoids. One of the induction coils is housed in the kiosk base while the other is inside the hand-held scanner. Overall this project turned out successful with some improvements that could be made if another version were to follow. We would like to see this technology used in places where students need to be checked- in. - 25. 25 HUSKER EMAIL + OFFICE 365 December Students at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln have access to a huskers email account on outlook giving them free access to office 365 products. A set of videos was created to instruct students on how to create their account, access their account and download the office 365 products. - 27. 27 3D PRINTER RESEARCH July - The main goal of this project is to research methods of 3d printing. The knowledge gained from researching, and building a 3d printer enables us to teach others this technology and to assist students/ professors in their creative ideas. The biggest piece of this project was buying and assembling a printrbot simple. There were challenges along they way, but ultimately we created a working 3d printer. The next step in the journey was testing print perimeters and materials to perfect the prints. Throughout this journey, we printed projects for professors and students. This is an ongoing project with several advancements. The use of ninjaFlex filament is currently being tested. This is a rubber-like material we plan on using to print apple watch replicas for the computer shop. - 29. 29 YOURTECH WEBSITE January - Yourtech was going under some re- branding, so the goal was to create a website that attracts visitors while also getting them the information they may need. The Academic Technology’s Learn IT team is comprised of a diverse set of technologically skill student staff. Each member of our team is passionate about using technology in our own lives as well as helping other students use technology to make their experience at UNL easier, more personalized, and most importantly matter. We created our website to communicate the services we offer as well as the ability to easily sign up for our services. - 31. 31 COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING TUTORIALS Feb-April Community and Regional Planning professors from the college of Architecture contacted us requesting a set of text and video tutorials for their courses. The tutorials were to cover the various graphic elements that the students needed to create when finalizing proposals and create project briefs. The tutorials were posted to studio and UNL Media Hub for the students to access when convenient for them. A final PDF document was presented to the students in the format that their final report would be in. The content of the document included descriptions and links to tutorials on how to make each element. - 33. 33 The aim of this study was to assess students’ needs in learning or using citation management tools or resources on campus when writing academic research papers. The main finding of this study is that many students, particularly TAs who write mainly papers for their academic work or teach classes where a lot of research or academic writing is required, are not quite familiar with the new citation management tools that can be useful for their work. The majority of students are not aware of the services on campus that can help them with these resources. It would be beneficial to students if the information about these resources on campus was disseminated in a different way. It would also be helpful if specific group of students were targeted and sent the information about these resources depending on their potential needs. For these purposes, we decided to team up in the future with UNL libraries and help them with their training on citation management tools by circulating information on workshops that are offered around campus. - 35. 35 DIGITAL HUMANITIES VIDEO April This project was made to promote the resources that student technology has to offer to students and professors alike. I took on this project as my first project with this team, and I wanted to work on the video because it is what I am familiar with. The final result was a long discovery of who I am as a designer and I got the chance to learn things about designing that I never paid attention to before. - 37. 37 MAKE IT SIGN April The Make IT space in Henzlik needed branding, so a door poster was created to be placed at the entrance and welcome students into the space. Information Technology Service’s Academic Technologies department has a unique student team that hosts a small space in the Henzlik Hub for “Learning by Tinkering”. We wanted to allow all students at UNL, regardless of their major, to access and be exposed to technologies that may have application in their future careers. The student staff spend time exploring how to use many different types of technologies, mixing and combining them in interesting new ways.
