This document provides information about a Student-Directed Learning (SDL) course. The SDL model allows students to decide what they will learn, how they will demonstrate their learning, and negotiate deadlines. Students set their own goals, identify tasks to achieve those goals, and support each other through peer editing and conferencing. The teacher coaches students and helps match them with appropriate learning strategies. Research shows SDL fosters personal growth, helps students learn for specific use of knowledge, and develops attributes of character. An example SDL program from Bradford High School is described which guides students through the SDL process.
