OBJECTIVE AND
METHODOLOGY
 To understand the need of building energy rating
systems in India
 To study various types of building energy rating
systems available in India
 To study various parameters of building energy
rating assessment
 To carry out energy rating assessment of NICMAR
Pune campus
 Methodology adopted for this work is literature
review and case study analysis
LITERATURE REVIEW
 Main purpose is to find out the relevant information
about building energy rating systems in India
 Literatures were grouped under three aspects
1. Sustainable Building Construction
2. Parameters of Building Energy Assessment
3. Building Construction Energy Rating Policy in India
 It helped us to understand what is sustainable
building construction and its importance for India
 We found the different advantages of sustainable
construction over conventional construction
LITERATURE REVIEW
 Some literature has discussed about building energy
rating assessment and its parameters.
 We found advantages of building energy
assessment in order to improve energy performance
of building
 After study we came to know about different
policies of building energy rating in India
 We came to know about different initiatives taken
by Government of India to implement these policies
 Various energy rating agencies in India are providing
guidelines for energy rating of all types of building
construction
 These are GRIHA, IGBC and BEE

CASE STUDY
 Energy rating of NICMAR, Pune campus with respect
to energy rating systems available in India
 Building type: Institutional building
 Building area: 2,62,767 sq.ft.
 Climate zone: Hot and dry
 Energy rating is done with reference to
 GRIHA
 LEED India NC
 Energy rating cannot be done with BEE as it is limited
to office buildings and commercial spaces
CASE STUDY
 Methodology adopted for energy rating of NICMAR
Pune campus consists of main 3 steps
 Data collection
 Data analysis
 Result generation and conclusion
CASE STUDY-Data
Collection
 Data about NICMAR campus was collected by
study of official documents like architecture
drawings, electrical drawings, electricity bill etc.
 Other information was collected by site visit to
various areas of campus
 Data about energy rating systems and parameters
was collected by literature review
 All other information like energy assessment
procedure and points allocation was obtained by
official websites of these energy rating schemes
CASE STUDY- LIMITATIONS
 We found limitations to data collection to following
areas
 Quality certificate of construction materials
 Whether local construction material used
 Data about site condition during construction
 Air and water quality during construction
 Details of quality of workmanship during construction
 We have done necessary assumptions as required
CASE STUDY-Data Analysis
 Required data was collected as per provision of
rating systems
 The data was then analyzed as per the procedure
given in energy rating systems
 We have followed guidelines given by GRIHA and
LEED India NC
 We have compared the campus details with the
standards provided by above mentioned rating
systems
 Necessary assumptions were made wherever
required
Sustainable features of
NICMAR Pune campus
 Use of composite building envelope
 Use of open grid pavement
 Reduction of hard paving
 Use of solar water heating system
 Waste water treatment plant
Sustainable features need
to be adopted
 Innovative waste water technologies
 Use of high efficiency irrigation technology
 Use of onsite renewable energy technologies like
solar lighting
 Effective solid waste management systems
 Reduce water use through automatic flushing, low
flush fixtures and other similar tools
 Use of BEE rated equipments for energy use
reduction
 Adoption of rain water harvesting systems

CONCLUSION
 Sustainable building construction is need of
developing countries like India.
 Energy rating assessment is perfect tool to check
performance of sustainability of a building
 In India GRIHA, IGBC and BEE are prime three energy
rating tools available for building energy assessment
 All these systems mainly assess building parameters
like water efficiency, energy efficiency, waste
management, site sustainability and safety-health
aspect.
 Building energy rating promotes energy saving and
reduction in building waste

SUGGESTIONS
 Energy rating assessment should be based on actual
performance of a building.
 A periodic energy rating of buildings should be
made mandatory
 In Indian context solar energy utilization should be
given high priority while checking building energy
performance.
 All building documents should be properly
maintained by owner so as to facilitate energy
assessment
 Government initiative is required to promote
awareness about building energy rating
