CSR CHECKLIST:
• "CSR is about how companies manage the business processes to produce an
overall positive impact on society” –Mallenbaker
• corporate governance refers to the set of principles, systems and processes to
which a company should adhere to and is governed. Corporate Governance can
be defined as “the design of institutions that induce or force management to
internalize the welfare of shareholders.” [Tirole, 2001, p.4]
• Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a self-regulating business model
that helps a company be socially accountable—to itself, its stakeholders,
and the public. By practicing corporate social responsibility, also
called corporate citizenship, companies can be conscious of the kind of
impact they are having on all aspects of society, including economic,
social, and environmental. (Jason Fernando , Investopia)
• Commitment of top management
• Involve middle managers knowledge.
• Communication is what implementation is all about.
• Integrate point of view.
• Clear assignment of responsibilities.
• Preventive measures against change barrier.
• Emphasize teamwork activities.
• Respect individuals’ characteristics.
EXAMPLE OF CORPORATE SOCIAL
RESPONSIBILITY
• Starbucks has long been known for its keen sense of corporate
social responsibility and commitment to sustainability and community
welfare. According to the company, Starbucks has achieved many of
its CSR milestones since it opened its doors. According to its 2019
Global Social Impact Report, these milestones include reaching 99%
of ethically sourced coffee, creating a global network of farmers,
pioneering green building throughout its stores, contributing millions
of hours of community service, and creating a groundbreaking
college program for its partner/employees (Starbucks 2019: Global Social
Impact Report)
• Starbucks' goals for 2020 and beyond include hiring 10,000
refugees, reducing the environmental impact of its cups, and
engaging its employees in environmental leadership.
EXAMPLE OF CORPORATE SOCIAL
RESPONSIBILITY
• Recognizing that cars are major producers of greenhouse gases, the Toyota
company has committed itself to move to a “zero emissions” world. Sharp
reductions in waste to landfill and products such as the successful Prius
hybrid petrol/electric model form part of this strategy. High profile “zero
emission” advertisements underline the integrated nature of the
commitment.
• Philips, a Dutch electronics firm, has launched a range of strategies built
around responding to sustainable development challenges. Its “Green
Flagship” and “Lighting the Bottom of the Pyramid” campaigns are
examples
DEVELOPING CSR STRATEGY:
Build support with Senior Management and
employees
Research what others are doing and existing
CSR instruments
DEVELOPING CSR STRATEGY:
Prepare a matrix of proposed CSR actions.
Develop options for proceeding and the
business case for them
PILLARS OF C.S.R. PROGRAMS
CSR
Assessment
• People - CSR cultivates goodwill and loyalty from clients,
it too can have the same effect internally. Making CSR a
priority creates a positive work environment that inspires
and unites employees. It supports recruitment, retention
and employee satisfaction.
• Environment-The environmental pillar often gets the
most attention. Companies are focusing on reducing
their carbon footprints, packaging waste, water usage
and their overall effect on the environment. Companies
have found that have a beneficial impact on the planet
can also have a positive financial impact
• Community-The third pillar of CSR is community.
Businesses have a role to play in making local
communities and the planet a cleaner place to live.
EVALUATION OF C.S.R. PROGRAMS
3 basic
principles
• Sustainability-is a responsibility for the impact that the
organization exerts on its surroundings, in business,
environmental and social terms.
• Accountability- refers to a publicly traded company’s
performance such as social responsibility and
sustainability.
• Transparency- A transparent organization provides
information in such a way that stakeholders involved
can obtain a proper insight into the issues that relevant
to them(Kaptein ,2005)
