The reader touches down periodically but never goes below the surface to seek a deeper and even more complete understanding of the text. When finished, the reader can tell someone what the subject of the text is but not what it means.

- 4. DECIDE WHAT TYPE OF READING YOU ARE DOING Are you reading for pleasure or to learn something.
- 5. GLANCE AT A PHRASE QUICKLY • Do not say or think of the words. Glance at the phrase and think of what it means. Quickly picture it in your mind.
- 6. PICTURE OR IMAGINE EACH PHRASE • At first this may take some effort, but if you've learned to read words without thinking of each letter, you can learn to stop thinking of each word
- 7. DON’T TRY TO DO FASTER THAN YOU CAN PICTURE THE IMAGE OF EACH PHRASE • The goal is to imagine the concept of each phrase. Pushing your speed without getting the meaning, is meaningless.
- 8. DO NOT WASTE MUCH TIME WITH THESE IDEAS • You can learn to 'speed read'. Unless you're a savant, reading will be limited to the speed you can think. Anything beyond that is skimming.
