SURVEY ANALYSIS
WHYWE DIDTHE SURVEY
 On surveymonkey we created a survey as a way to do audience research for
our music video. By finding out what the audience likes and expects from
music videos it will help us plan and make our own.
 In total our survey had 8 questions, and we had 32 responses.
QUESTION 1:WHAT ISYOUR GENDER?
 The first question we asked was
‘what is your gender’, to this
question 27 people answered
female, 4 people answered male
and 1 person answered other.
From these results we can see
that our survey will mostly reflect
the views of females, which we
will take into consideration whilst
analysing the results.
QUESTION 2:WHAT ISYOUR AGE?
 The second question was ‘what is
your age’, to this 25 people answered
13 to 17 and 7 people answered 18 to
24.This shows that our target
audience is a young audience,
therefore we could do things such as
use teenage characters in our video to
appeal to them.
QUESTION 3:WHAT ISYOUR FAVOURITE
MUSIC GENRE?
 The third question we asked was ‘what is
your favourite music genre’. For this
question 7 people answered rock, 11
people answered pop, 1 person answered
rap, 4 people punk, 1 person classical, 2
people hip-hop, 2 people indie, no one
answered jazz and 4 people put other
(musical, mixed and 2 people answered
kpop). The genre we are focusing on is
rock, however the range of genres that
people answered means we will able to
incorporate things that will appeal to
people of all music tastes.
QUESTION 4: HOW OFTEN DOYOUWATCH
MUSICVIDEOS?
 The fourth question we asked was ‘how
often do you watch music videos’. For
this question 3 people responded
never, 7 people responded once a
month, 8 people for once a week, 4
people for once a day and 10 people for
multiple times a day. This shows that
more than a third of people will watch
music videos daily, therefore we can
aim to make an interesting music video
that people want to watch more than
once.
QUESTION 5: WHATTYPE OF MUSIC
VIDEOS DOYOU LIKETHE BEST?
 The fifth question we asked was
‘what type of music videos do you
like the best’.To this 13 people
chose narrative and performance, 2
people conceptual and 3 people
answered other. Narrative and
performance were equally the
most popular type, therefore we
can try to include both types in
ours to appeal to the most people.
QUESTION 6:WHAT ISYOUR FAVOURITE
MUSICVIDEO ANDWHY?
 For question 6 we allowed people to write their own answers instead of choosing from a
pre-set list, this meant that our data was valid and that people could freely express their
thoughts. Each person answered different music videos, for example ‘All time low
Weightless It is comedic and it’s a good song and it shows the bands personality’, this
answer shows that the artists personality being reflected is important. Another
response we got was ‘Sound of silence – disturbed. The whole video, outfits and
background, really show what the song is about and emphasises the song’, this shows that
people like for their to be a connection between the song and the video we can
incorporate in ours, for example having a link between lyrics and visuals. One person
answered ‘Kate Bush - Experiment IV = the storyline and performance paint such vivid
images as to what working in a secret laboratory would be like and working with the
unknown.’, this shows that people like a mix of narrative and performance which we
could do with our video.
QUESTION 7:WHATWOULD ATTRACTYOU
TOWATCH A MUSICVIDEO?
 For question 7 we allowed people to write their own answers instead of choosing from
pre-set ones, the purpose of this question was to find out what intrigues people to watch
a music video, so we could incorporate peoples answers into our video so it would appeal
to a wide audience. A common answer we received was ‘the artist’, although we are using
a song from an already established artist, we could incorporate elements from Fall Out
Boys so people feel a familiarity, and also include conventions from the genre of rock.
Another answer we received was ‘How artistic it is or how smart the artist was with their
music video and whether they can resonate something in the watcher- I find that incredibly
important’. From this answer we can see that it is important for their to be a connection
between the viewer and the video, through our video we could create this connection
through characters that the viewer can relate to or imagine meeting in real life. Another
common answer we received was ‘the song itself’, our song choice The Last of the Real
Ones is upbeat and fast paced, therefore it could be more appealing to people.
QUESTION 8:WHATWOULDYOU EXPECT IN A
ROCK MUSICVIDEO? (CLOTHING, CHARACTERS,
SETTING ETC.)
 Our song choice for our music video is by Fall Out Boy who are a rock group, therefore
through this question we could find out how to make our video reflect conventions of
the genre so it appeals to our target audience. An answer we received a lot for this
questions was ‘dark themes’, therefore people expect rock music videos to deal with
topics that wouldn’t be usually found in music videos, we have planned to base our
video around stalking which would not be out of place with the music. Another answer
we received multiple times was ‘black clothing’, this is a common convention of the rock
genre we could follow, however we could also go against what people usually expect,
therefore not limiting ourselves to just sticking within ideas of the genre. Another
answer we received was ‘I personally like the stories in rock music videos so I’d expect
some character development and maybe a representation of a minority class which is
usually dismissed in a lot of videos’, therefore having a narrative storyline would be
appealing and also including characters that the viewers can connect with.
