Section B. Marker Research Analysis
Survey Results
The purpose for my research is to find out about the target audience, style and structure of my
magazine. I have designed a questionnaire. This is primary research. I have used qualitative and
quantative data.

Gender

Male
Female

I sent my survey to 6 people, 3 male and 3 female so I could receive fair market research. This means
that I will receive a balance of opinions that won’t be biased to either men or women. This is
qualitative data.

Age
0-15
16-25

The replies I got were mainly from people aged 16-25. This means that the target audience will be
aged 15-25 as it was the most popular group. This is quantative data.
Favourite Genres Of Music?

Jazz
Indie/Alternative
Dubstep
Pop
Rock and Roll

Other

The most popular choice of music is indie/alternative. This means that genre will be the main feature
in my music magazine; also, the second highest percentage went to jazz, so I may do a feature on
jazz. This is because by doing this, I am aiming toward a wide target audience with music that I know
is popular, so it will increase my chances of purchases being made. This is effective qualitative data.
Music Magazine Purchase

Weekly
Fortnightly
Monthly
Never

The majority of people I surveyed don’t purchase music magazines, which means I would have to
create a magazine that would appeal to a broad target audience. This is because I would need to
interest people who don’t normally purchase music magazines. I would consider putting in a free CD
with every magazine to help make sales.

This is the collected results of the question “How do you usually listen to music?”. The Majority of
people said YouTube, Spotify, iTunes and CD’s. So, when thinking of the artists and bands to do
stories on in my magazine, I would look at the most purchased and listened-to songs on these media
platforms.

Textual

This shows that 100% of the people who answered my survey prefer the visual side of the magazine,
rather than the textual side. So, when creating my magazine, I will use more images than pictures.
How often do you seek new music?

Weekly
Monthly
Yearly
Other

This shows that that majority of people who answered my survey seek new music weekly. This
means that I would consider not using the same artist twice in a row to create an article about.

Why do you read music magazines?

New Music
Read about favourite artists
Find new artists
See band and artist images
Other

This shows that the majority of people who answered my survey read magazines to find out about
new music and read about their favourite artists, so, when making my magazine, I would make sure
to write about the new music that month, and about the most popular artists in the ‘indie’ genre.
How much would you spend on a good
quality magazine?

£0-£2.50
£2.51-£3.50
£3.51-£4.50

This shows that 100% of the people who answered my survey would be prepared to pay anything
from £2.50-£3.50, so, I would price my magazine at £3 so it would not be too high for those who
were prepared to pay lower.

Which magazines have you read before?

NME
POP
Rolling Stone
Q
Kerrang

These results show that the most read magazine is Q, therefore I would use this information and use
Q magazine as an influential source to base my music magazine on.
