Making Good Survey Questions 
An アンケート in Japanese is usually called a __ __ __ __ __ __ in English. For your 
final speech, you will need to make your own simple survey, so we need to learn about 
how to make good survey questions.

Let’s look at 2 types of questions.

Close-ended Questions: These questions give a few choices to choose from. 
Multiple choice questions, scale questions, and yes/no questions are all types of close-ended 
questions.

Here are some examples of close-ended multiple choice questions: 
Which hamburger shop do you like best?

! b) McDonalds 
! c) Lotteria 
! d) Freshness Burger 
Which of these is your favorite kind of pet? 
! a) bird 
! b) pig 
! c) hamster 
! d) fish 
Imagine one of these was your survey question. Would this data be easy to make into a 
graph? 
What kind of graph would you use? 
What are some of the problems with this type of question? 日本語OK
Here are some examples of scale questions: 
On a scale of 0 (not at all) to 5 (very excited), how much are you looking forward to moving 
to Nagoya campus next year?

On a scale of 0 (not at all) to 5 (very, very much), how much do you want to get married? 
!

Imagine one of these was your survey question. Would this data be easy to make into a

Open-ended Questions: These questions allow people to answer freely. They 
usually don’t give a list of choices. 
Here are a few examples of open ended questions: 
Could you tell me about your favorite hamburger shop? 
What do you think about the move to Nagoya campus? 
Imagine one of these was your survey question. Would this data be easy to make into a 
graph? 
What kind of graph would you use? 
What are some of the problems with this type of question? 日本語OK
