A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand's South Island on July 7, 2011 at a depth of 60km, generating a tsunami up to 1m in size that caused some damage to coastal islands but no major damage. The earthquake was deep focus and while it caused some collapsed houses and injuries of unknown numbers, loss of life was uncertain due to it occurring shortly after a larger February 2011 earthquake that had consumed resources.
