CONSERVATION MODELING AND VERIFICATION IN AGRICULTURE
OPERATIONS
AGRICULTURE ENERGY AUDITS
 Required for some federal, state, utility
programs
 Recommend EE options for the business
 May be based on auditor/producer/
utility/state/equipment dealer/BMP
preferences
AGRICULTURE ENERGY AUDITS
 Used for:
o Finding energy and cost savings
o Acquiring incentives/payments/grants for
improvements
o Encourage equipment sales
ESTIMATING ENERGY SAVINGS
 Who is doing the modeling and
calculations for energy savings?
o Done by independent 3rd parties
o Done by equipment dealers
o Done using university tools

 Proprietary tools
ENERGY SAVINGS
 Energy audit is complete and producer
installs recommendations
 How can he/she be sure they are getting
what they paid for?
 How can an EE program be sure they are
getting the savings they are paying
incentives for?
THE DISCONNECT
 Disconnect between person doing
energy audit, equipment dealer, and
installer
 Energy savings and system performance
vary based upon design changes and
control set points that may appear minor

LIGHTING
 Must know desired lighting levels and
height before getting bids
 Lighting layouts can help verify new
lighting will meet desired lighting
 How reasonable are the layouts?
 No requirements for lighting, only
recommendations
LIGHTING LAYOUT
VERIFICATION
 Producer should get energy savings
verified by independent 3rd party
 Hold back of final payment installation
until verification is complete
 If not getting what paid for equipment
dealer/installer fix before receiving
payment
CONCLUSIONS
 Producer should know what he can
expect from new equipment
 Need to remove disconnect between
energy auditor, equipment dealer, and
installer
 Need to verify what is installed is going to
give producer what is expected

Editor's Notes

  • #8: You can say after this that you are going to show them the different energy savings between a few different sample projects that had different energy savings based upon the level of installation expertise of the installer and equipment dealer. You can also show how the type of project that has the most variable savings changes across the country.
  • #9: 500 head dairy, 85#/cow/day, with VSMP Assuming milk in pipeline is at 95 degrees before hitting plate cooler. There is additional cost and control needed to get to these goals. Require larger water line, larger water holding tanks, more plumbing to livestock waterers for reuse, solenoids, etc.
  • #10: 500 head dairy, 85#/cow/day, with VSMP Assuming milk in pipeline is at 95 degrees before hitting plate cooler. There is additional cost and control needed to get to these goals. Require larger water line, larger water holding tanks, more plumbing to livestock waterers for reuse, solenoids, etc.
  • #11: Automated control = temp control for on/off Detailed and Tuned = temp control with VFD
  • #12: Automated = thermostat for all on/off or ½ on/off Detailed and Tuned = PLC with staging in groups of 4 fans
  • #13: This one is a bit different because for many ag. operations the lighting levels are only suggestions. Then you need to determine what you are aiming for at the end of the project and specify you want that performance. Bids can be drastically different in if they are producing varying levels of light. Lighting layouts should have reasonable depreciation taken into account as well as reasonable reflectance values and mounting heights
