The syllabus for the International Mathematics Olympiad covers pre-degree college mathematics including arithmetic, geometry, quadratic equations, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, systems of linear equations, permutations and combinations, factorizing polynomials, inequalities, elementary combinatorics, probability theory, number theory, finite series, complex numbers, and elementary graph theory. The major areas examined are number theory, geometry, algebra, and combinatorics. While the topics are from Class IX to XII levels, the problems increase in difficulty from regional to national to international competitions.

The areas covered are 1) Arithmetic of integers, 2) Geometry 3) Quadratic equations and expressions 4) Trigonometry 5) Co-ordinate geometry 6) Systems of linear equations 7) Permutations and combinations 8) Factorisation of polynomials 9) Inequalities 10) Elementary combinatorics 11) Probability theory and number theory, finite series 12) Complex numbers 13) Elementary graph theory. Note: The syllabus does not include Calculus and Statistics. The major areas from which problems are given are number theory, geometry, algebra and combinatorics. The syllabus is in a sense spread over Class IX to Class XII levels, but the problems under each topic are of exceptionally high level in difficulty and sophistication. The difficulty level increases from RMO to INMO to IMO.
