Introduction
 The science of mechanism kinematics is roughly divided in two divergent
topics:
i. Analysis
ii. Synthesis
 Analysis:- It is study of motions and forces concerning different parts of
an existing mechanism.
 Synthesis:- It is study of the design of its different parts.

Graphical Synthesis Analytical Synthesis
Invention Method Relative pole Method

Type Synthesis
 Type Synthesis refers to the kind of mechanism selected, it might be a
linkage, a geared system, belts and pulleys, or even a cam system.
 This beginning phase of total design problem usually involves design
factors such as manufacturing process, materials, safety space and
economics.
 The study of Kinematics is usually only slightly involved in type
synthesis.
Type Synthesis
 The six categories are:
i. Eye-bar type link (the lower pairs).
ii. Wheels, including gears.
iii. Cams in their many forms.
iv. The screw (which transmits force and motion).
v. Intermittent-motion devices (rachets).
vi. Tension-compression parts with one-way rigidity such as belts, chains,
and hydraulic or pneumatic lines.
Number Synthesis
 Number synthesis is the second step in the process of mechanism design. It
deals with determining the number of DOF and the number of links and
joints required. See Figure(next slide) If each DOF of the linkage is to be
controlled in a closed kinematic chain, then an equal number of active
inputs is required.
 Degree of freedom:
Kutzback Criterion :- F=3(l-1)-2J-H
Gruebler’s Criterion:- F=3(l-1)-2J
Where J= number of joints
H= number of surfaces

Dimensional Synthesis
 The third step in design, determining the dimensions of individual link is
called dimensional synthesis.
