NAME: CHEW UNG HENG ID: 0315397
LECTURER: MR. LAM SHEN FEI TUTORIAL TIME: 4 PM
SYNOPSIS NO: 3 READER TITLE: THE GEOMETRY OF FEELING
AUTHOR: JUHANI PALLASMAA
The author of this book addressing to a very principle on how to include any sense of the meaning of
our world that failed to get from our current buildings. The author reveals some of her ideas on the
architecture designing. At the beginning, Juhani said out his viewpoint on the relationship between
the architectural form and the experiencing of architecture. He remind us not to make such mistake
in just thinking of an assessing building without knowing to experience the other reality that lies
behind the symbol. Besides, Juhani found that the art of the visual sense has been reduced in his
elementarist view as it used to be taught to combine various visual elements of form and space that
stimulates our visual senses from the visual perception. Then, Juhani also mentioned that the work
of art only exists in the consciousness of the person experiencing it but not just lie in the actual
physic thing. Form only affects our feeling through what it represents.
As an architect, Juhani advised us not to just primarily design buildings as physical objects, but do
think the image and feelings of the people who live in them. Thus those images and basic feelings
only connected within the building. For the material, Juhani said that it also has been offered for
architectural experience that presented in other branches of art. In designing the interior, Juhani
mentioned that different principle from the architecture is need to built those feelings and memory
images for the people living inside.
Juhani believed that architecture not only play with the form but also influence the emotional feelings
that linked our souls with the images a building creates. Juhani also introduced the types of
experience could well be among the primary feelings produced by architecture. He believed that the
quality of architecture does not lie in the sense of reality within the building itself but its capacity for
awakening our imagination. In architecture designing, one should design based for the needs of the
real people but not just for the aesthetic purpose.
