Meet the Tweet An Introduction to Twitter Presenter: Ellen Phillips Instructional Technology Specialist OET Queens
What is Twitter? A free social networking site 140 character messages or “tweets” Also called “microblogging” Uses the Web, IMs and SMS texting
Getting Started Twitter.com “ Sign Up Now”
Registering with Twitter Use your real name so you can be found Upload a picture/avatar if you like Do not select  “Inside Scoop” to avoid spam
Your Twitter Account Setting Create a username and password Provide your email address Supply some information to make you searchable
Setting up your account… Select ‘Protect my tweets’ Only approved viewers will be able to see your tweets.
Linking your Mobile Device Click on “Mobile” on Settings menu bar From your phone, text “40404” and follow directions that will be sent to your mobile device via text message.
Settings for your Mobile Device Your # will be here. Once you register your phone, your number will show in settings. Make sure you select “Direct Messages” under Device updates
Your Home Page Under “What’s Happening?” you can write a 140 character message People whose Tweets you receive are those you are FOLLOWING. People who follow your Tweets are FOLLOWERS.
Who Should You Follow? You can follow friends and family members. You can follow colleagues who share your interests. Following colleagues with shared interests can provide you with links, and other information. To find followers based on a topic, use your search tool.
Following Type in a keyword Click on icon or  press “enter” Read through the resulting tweets.

The Value of Followers The more followers you have, the better the chance that you will get responses to your questions When you request to follow someone, they will often request to follow you. Spend some time building up your account to make it productive for you.
Person-to-Person Tweets Use the “Direct” command to send tweets directly to another person.
What Is A Hashtag? “ #” as a prefix to a keyword in a tweet. Search “#lost” and you will see all tweets related to the television show “Lost.” Hashtags allow you to create communities of common interests.
Backchannel Chat Any user can create a hashtag by adding it to their own tweet. Create a hashtag for today’s workshop: #OETQJan14 Search #OETQJan14 and create a “backchannel” conversation with other participants in today’s workshop.
