Task 1 conventions of a thriller power point 1
We used the font ‘trajan’ ,
which is commonly used in
thrillers , its sharp edged and
thin style is often related to
thrillers because of its fairly
chilling look and its reminder
of sharp edges . We put our
titles in with the action
instead of it being on a black ,
blank screen. Similar to the
thriller ‘step father’ , we
placed them in the corners to
keep the attention on the
thrillers details , similar to
step father , again similar in
the way that we made them
fade away , normally in time
with a new shot .
We edited in a lot of sound effects , firstly our wind and bird
noises create and add to the isolated and alone effect that we
were looking for , we were able to create an eerie and chilling
vibe through this , it also allowed for a more realistic sense for
the outdoor shots. Secondly we introduced slow and deep non
diagetic sounds when the action was about to begin , this linked
in with the killers emotionless expression and lack of dialogue just
before our actor was killed.
We set out to use locations which automatically
release a sense of isolation to the audience , the
audience refer this to thrillers which tend to involve
helpless victims etc.. We used a lot of establishing
shots to create this effect which was also backed up
by some of our sound editing , involving slow wind
which adds to the isolated and alone feeling . Similar
thrillers such as the shining or the evil dead use
similar establishing shots to create a feeling of rural
isolation.
For our action shots we used close up over the sholder shots to
concentrate on the victims face , before and after the action . The
close up we used for this shot really captures a victims emotion , a
sudden shock to the audience can be created from this . We refered
this to a similar shot in the village as the victim is suddenly and
randomly stabbed once , like our victim.
Most of our editing came within sound effects , we lifted a lot
of noises to create an unusual feeling where the audience
doesn’t quite know what to expect , for example , at the
beginning , our establishing shots involve a chopping sound ,
this slowly gets louder as the shots change , it then cuts to a
shot of a log and silence , the audience dont know what to
expect and then tension is released . Similar to ‘scream’ the
scene involving drew barrymore’s death at the beginning has
lifted sound to create suspense , not quite as extreme as ours
though.
We also manipulated the speed of the shots , the
establishing shots were lengthened , defining the location
and setting , along with the lifting of the axe noise it
allowed for the audience to begin thinking about what will
happen next .
We chose our main props of a knife and axe as
they are an automatic reference to violence and
are commonly found within thrillers. we were
able to feed theses props to the audience and
create an almost false sense of security as they
don’t know whether to believe they are tools or
weapons , but it hints a theme. we can easily
compare this to the shining or the village.
