Evaluation 7: LOOKING BACK AT YOUR
PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL
YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL
PRODUCT?
INTRODUCTION:
As part of my preliminary task, I had to create a college magazine for students, it had to
consist of a front cover and contents page. Since it was produced for Leyton Sixth Form,
the target audience would be for students who attend the college. I had to take photos
by myself and think of the layout and everything else by myself, but the software's we
got to use to help us was Photoshop and In-Design.

The differences that applied with my student magazine was that it consist for only
students who come to the college so it was a minority, whereas, the music magazine was
for a wider range of target audiences including the ages that varied from before. They
were two both completely different topic, as we went from a magazine for students to a
music magazine. Since the music magazine was targeted for a wider ranger of audiences
with different ages we had to take more care on this so that it looked real and
professional. Since it was our second time using the software’s making our music
magazine, we did a better job at it than the second time since we got used to the
technology. In addition, for the student magazine we didn’t need to create a double-
page spread but we had to for the music magazine which made things a little more tense
for it to be done just the right away.

Another contrast between the two magazines is that, the student magazine cost 59p and
the music magazine cost £2.99 so the cost of purchase increased dramatically which
made it more of a sense that we had to get it perfect as it would be in the market which
means that it had a lot to compete for, whereas, the student magazine didn’t.

MASTHEADS: BELOW ARE THE IMAGES THAT I USED FOR BOTH TASKS.
By looking at the first image (the preliminary work) you can
clearly see that the colours of the masthead didn’t blend
well together and the font, including the colours of the
font, did not mesh well together with the background as it
should have. It doesn’t look as attractive as I would have
liked it to be, which will prevent the students from being
attracted to it too. However, if we look at the second image
(music magazine) we can see how things have developed ..do because I had a clear colour
and the colours have changed dramatically. Now that I have scheme which I stuck to and I didn’t
positioned my masthead in a different manner than the first have to worry about colours
it has a different affect on the whole magazine, it gives it a overlapping or clashing or not going
different look. There has been a change from the font I used well together. I used more stronger,
on the first masthead and you can see clearly what they bright, bold, eye-catching colours
both represent. I didn’t use any form of shapes around my on the second masthead.

not interesting to look at, rather than the second masthead of effect on the second image
which gives a better view of how things have changed and it made the masthead stand out
looks far more interesting. Using different fonts and colours more, whereas, in the first image it
really changed the look of these two mastheads. I used all blended in together and didn’t

and stands out from the page. In addition, the colours have would be interested in, but the

second, I don’t use as much colours on the second because it looks attractive and
masthead as I do on the first, this has been a good thing to.. interesting.
FRONT COVER IMAGE & THE FONT:
There has been a dramatic change to the two images I used for my preliminary front cover and for my music
front cover. When you look at my music magazine you can clearly guess out what genre it is from by the
colours and effects I have put on it. By adding the typical conventions of rock, I have made my one look very
obvious as to which genre it is. The colours blend in well together and the colours compliment the image
more. By putting an effect on the image it has made it more alluring and interesting to look at. My music
magazine looks far more professional than my student magazine because the effect I used on that image
make it looks sort of amateur because it looks too bright and the colour of the cover lines don’t compliment
the picture at all. In addition, the location I chose for my student magazine was in a library against a wooden
background, this didn’t turn out to be such a good idea because it was difficult for me to choose a colour for
my cover lines which stood out. So I decided for my music magazine that I’d rather be in a studio where
there was nothing going on in the background, just a plain background so that the main focus would be on
the model only. When carrying out my research on which magazine my audience liked better, the majority
had said my music magazine because the colours complimented the image very well and everything meshed
well together, as this did not happen for my student magazine. Moreover, in my student magazine my model
is making direct eye-contact, however, in my music magazine I decided if my model was looking away from
the camera it would give it more of an interesting vibe seeing as the audience would want to know more
about her seeing as she looked mysterious. I also, decided that I would go for a different type of shot
because in my student magazine you can see my models knees, and in the music magazine you can only see
a mid shot of her, which allowed the audience to only look at the models facial expressions. Furthermore,
my fonts have changed as well because on the student magazine two of the cover lines are in capitals and
the rest were in lower case which didn’t make it look professional at all, plus I had added too many cover
lines which took up most of the space. In the music magazine, I had limited how many cover lines I used and
didn’t use too much colours, this made it seem professional than the first. The fonts that I used was ‘Arial’ in
the student magazine which was very simple and tedious, whereas, in the music magazine, I used ‘Impact’
and ‘Francois One’ which made it look effective and interesting to look at.
CONTENTS PAGE: BELOW ARE THE IMAGES THAT I USED FOR THE TWO
TASKS.
LAYOUTS OF THE CONTENTS PAGE & THE TEXT:
In terms of the layouts of how it was in the student magazine to how it was in the music magazine, it has
improved. There seems to be a lot of space in the student magazine, it looks bare due to the fact that I didn’t
add more ‘Features’ of what’s going to be inside. This contrasts to the music magazine because I added a lot
more content in it and it doesn’t look bare and looks more professional. My music magazine is well
structured as the images go well with the text. The colours in the student magazine doesn’t compliment the
background or the images either which makes it look unattractive. There are too many colours being used on
the student magazine which makes it hard to tell which colours are the important ones to match the colour-
scheme. In the music magazine we can clearly see what colours are being used which determines the colour-
scheme.

The way my ‘Contents’ title has been placed has been contrasted too seeing as on the music magazine it is
going down the page which makes it look different to how magazines usually have it. The layout of the
numbers on the student magazine look to large on the page and it doesn’t look like it’s been structured
properly. Whereas, on the music magazine, all the page numbers are all the same size and have been
carefully put at the bottom left corner of every image to make it look better structured.

Another thing that contrasts between the two contents page is that the model who was in my front cover on
my student magazine isn’t shown again in the contents page, and I have improved this mistake because on
my music magazine I made the front model reappear again. Also, I decided not to add capital letters at the
start of every subheading because it made it look untidy and uneven. The ‘Summaries’ of what I wrote of
what’s going to be in the ‘Features’, I didn’t act the correct images to tell this, whereas, in the music
magazine I structured it better and linked the text to the images.
