Contents page NME (SEPT 2009) ANALYSIS
The masthead is written in a medium, bold, san serif font and
follows the colour scheme of the cover page. This is done to
create brand recognition, readers will be able to associate the
colours with the magazine. NME is written in red whereas
contents is written in white, this allows the red to strike out. The
colour scheme is one way of giving the brand it’s identity
the banner is important because it anchors the front page logo
lets the readers know that this is the contents page which they
can use as an index to find the articles they want to read
                 about.
The whole layout has a retro aspect to it. The main Image is

    {
edited so it looks like a vintage photograph . This is appropriate
because the ‘scrap book’ effect adds a personal touch to the
page. As always the image always relates back to the main
article within the page. In this case it would be the ‘touring
special’ hence the female pointing at the tour bus.
The date of the issue allows the readers to make sure they are
reading an up-to date edition .
The SUB heading divided into black subs sections, breaks down
the magazine. Readers are directly able to find the articles they
want to read about. The page numbers are in chronological
order which is a convention in music magazines. On the left
hand side is the band index this allows the readers to skip
straight to their favourite bands and clearly states that the
following magazine is based on the genre Rock. The fact that
the bands are listed in red with page number in black makes it
more easier for the readers to read.
Contents page NME (SEPT 2009)
ANALYSIS

Editors note on contents page gives readers an in depth guide to the magazine, it also
adds a personal touch. The informal language such as ‘eh’ refers back to the young
audience the magazine is aimed at. This allows the editors to create a bond with the
 readers.
In all the issues of NME, on the contents page an advertisement for subscription is always
published. The NME ad is a persuasion technique making readers think that if they subscribe
it will be cheaper. This also gives them a chance to add their contact information
The main image is a medium shot of a female from The Big Pink band. The picture refers
back to the header on the cover page. ‘’16 page autumn tour special’. Since most of the
readers are males, having an attractive woman on the page may lure them in.
The brief headings are an even more detailed insight of what the section/article is about.
ANALYSIS OF Q magazine contents page 2010
The heading of this contents page is subtly displayed. Editors
have cleverly paste a front cover of the magazine by the
banner to reveal the title of the magazine. No date is
displayed on the banner however they have revealed that
                     this is the 283 issue.
The banner is red while the words are in white which allows
                     the writing to stand out.

Unlike other music magazines, there is no dominant image.
They have created their own significant convention by
placing various images in different sizes. The number next to
the each image is as a visual affect allowing the readers to
know what the article will be about. This usually takes place
when the target audience is younger.
The featured articles are located on the left side of the
page under the heading ‘Regulars’ this means that the
following articles are always featured in Q magazine
                     however the stories may vary.

The colour scheme is one way of the things that gives a
magazine it’s brand identity. The colour theme is quite
neutral which makes it sophisticated and professional. The
background is an off white which allows the writing to stand
out. The plain white background allows the writing to be
clearly displayed and makes it easier for the audience to
                     read.
The contents page successfully conveys the basic codes
and conventions of any music magazine. The page is image
dominated which would appeal more to the reader.
Analysis OF Vibe Magazine Contents Page
The heading of this contents page is displayed in a large bold,
blue/greyish san serif ‘V’ closer to the left side of the page, this
reminds the readers that this is Vibe magazine. The word
contents is displayed in large writing and is divided into three
lines, this makes it clear to the readers that this is the contents
page. This form of headline takes place in every issue of ‘Vibe’
this is one way of creating brand recognition. Vibe follows the
typical convention that most music magazines follow is having a
dominant image in the centre of the page and is usually the
same artist/band on the front cover
               In this case,
Kanye West is the main featured artist, this suggests that he will
probably be the main article of the issue. He looks quite serious
and has a slight frown on his mouth. He also dominates the
page, looking straight at the camera, this creates a direct
mode of address and a form of ‘connection’ with the reader.
The dull background associates with the miserable look on his
face, this on the other hand has a sense of class & sophistication
to it. This suggests that he may be feeling down. He is dressed in
casual smart attire which differentiates him from the
stereotypical rapper (dressed in simple baggy clothes with lots
               of jewellery etc.)
A hand is wrapped around his chest and places a heart
approximately on his heart. This may be Mise-en-scene that a
woman has or is taking over Kanye’s heart the colour red stands
out over the grey background. On the right side of the corner
the cover stories are displayed under the category ‘Features’
this is a convention that is usually located in all magazine
               covers.
Analysis OF Vibe Magazine
Contents Page

Overall, this particular issue absences writing as the reader does not have a
proper insight to the issue, this may detract the audience as the colours are
quite bland. It follows the basic conventions of a music magazine as well as
develops it’s own USP differentiating itself from other magazines.
