Communication protocols,
methods and devices
Nicole
Protocols - HTTP
• HTTP stands for hyper text transfer protocol .
• “HTTPS is a secure method of accessing or sending information across a web page. All data
sent over HTTPS is encrypted before it is sent.”
http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/h/http.htm
• Like seen above http is the underlining protocol for the world wide web (www) and defines
how messages are transmitted and formatted.
• When you enter a web address in your browser online, it sends an HTTP command to the web
server directing it to find process and upload the requested web page.
Protocols - WAP
• WAP stands for wireless access protocol.
• “WAP is a popular type of mobile internet service which can be used on a handheld
device, such as a mobile phone or PDA. It enables you to go online while out and about
and is especially handy if you want to get the latest news updates, sports scores and
travel updates.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/guides/about-wap
• For android devices there is a limit to the amount of memory on each device, so WAP
uses microbrowsers - shrinking the size of webpages to provide more browsing space.
“The type of information available via WAP includes :
• News flashes and stories
• Sports scores and results
• Train and flight times
• Weather forecasts
• Share prices
• Addresses and phone numbers
• Traffic and travel news
• You may also be able to check your email using webmail or applications supplied by
some free email providers”
GSM (Global system for mobile)
• “GSM, which stands for Global System for Mobile communications, reigns as the
world’s most widely used cell phone technology. Cell phones use a cell phone
service carrier’s GSM network by searching for cell phone towers in the nearby
area.” “GSM uses digital technology and is a second-generation (2G) cell phone
system.”
• Example: T-Mobile uses GSM technology for its cell phone network.
• GSM can be accessed on mobile phones.
3G (3rd generation protocol)
• “3G is a mobile communications standard that allows mobile phones, computers,
and other portable electronic devices to access the Internet wirelessly.”
https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=2ESMU-
L_KcHX8gfEwICIAg#q=what+is+3G
3G can be accessed on: “The first thing you require is a device (e.g. a mobile phone)
that is 3G compatible. This is where the name 3G phone comes from - a phone that has
3G functionality; nothing to do with the number of cameras or the memory it has. An
example is the iPhone 3G.
3G phones commonly have two cameras since the technology allows the user to have
video calls, for which a user-facing camera is required for capturing him/her.
Unlike with Wi-Fi which you can get for free in hotspots, you need to be subscribed to a
service provider to get 3G network connectivity. We often call this kind of service a
data plan or network plan.” – So any modern phone that can registered to having 3G.”
3G - continued
• “Your device is connected to the 3G network through its SIM card (in the
case of a mobile phone) or its 3G data card (which can be of different
types: USB, PCMCIA etc.), which are both generally provided/sold by the
service provider. Through that, you get connected to the Internet whenever
you are within a 3G network. Even if you are not in one, you can still use
2G or 2.5G services provided by the service provider.”
http://voip.about.com/od/mobilevoip/p/3G.htm
• 3G can be accessed on any basic phone that is able to be registered 3G by
the service provider.
• Example:
3G continued
Here are some examples of phones that are 3G on sale on
Amazon.
4G (4th general protocol)
• 4G is “a mobile communications standard intended to replace 3G, allowing
wireless Internet access at a much higher speed.”
• Example: “They recently announced that the newest iPad will support 4G“
• A PC, tablet, laptop or a mobile device can all be connected via 4G
wireless.
• Here’s a little diagram showing how 4G works.
GPRS (General pack radio service)
• “GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a method of enhancing 2G phones
to enable them to send and receive data more rapidly. With a GPRS
connection, the phone is "always on" and can transfer data immediately,
and at higher speeds.” - http://www.s21.com/gprs.htm
• GPRS can be accessed on every mobile phone device.
• Example: “The following example creates a GPRS network connection to
Internet. The value set for DestId is the GUID that is defined in the
CM_Networks configuration service provider. This GUID specifies the
metanetwork to which the connection will be made.”
Bluetooth
• “Bluetooth is a standard for the short-range wireless interconnection of mobile
phones, computers, and other electronic devices.”
• Example: Send (a photograph or other piece of data) from one electronic device to
another via Bluetooth.
• "I took a quick picture with my mobile and Bluetoothed it across to my laptop.“ –
https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=R3-MU-byAoTY8g:
fhnIDYDA#q=what+is+bluetooth
• Bluetooth can be accessed on any mobile phone device.
Broadband (ADSL)
• “(Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line,) An ‘always-on’ ADSL phone line where the upload
speed is different from the download speed. Usually the download speed is much
greater.” -
https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=ccaMU8voLsbX8gfU4oHoCQ#q=what+is+bro
adband+ADSL
• Example:
• “ADSL is the name given to a broadband connection which works through the copper
wires of your existing phone line.
• When ADSL broadband is installed a microfilter is plugged into your phone connection.
This separates the frequency of your phone line from that of your broadband
connection. It is this that allows you to surf the web while chatting on the phone.
• ADSL broadband comes through the BT phone line network direct to your house. This
makes it the most popular type of broadband available, simply because it's so easy to
sign up to.
• All the technology is already in place too, so connecting up is really simple and the
service is available right across the country.”
Broadband (ADSL)
• Nearly every home in the UK can now get
ADSL broadband. It can be accessed on mobile
devices (if able to connect to the internet) and
other technologies such as laptop, home PC,
iPad, tablet and also game consoles can
connect up to it as its just a WiFi connection
basically.
VoIP (Voice over internet protocol)
• “Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for
the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet
Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_over_IP
• “Alternatively referred to as IP telephone or Internet phone, VoIP is short for Voice
over Internet Protocol and it enables users to make calls over the Internet. To make
a call a telephone is connected to a network cable, versus a standard phone line or
a call is made over a computer. This allows long distant phone calls to be cheaper,
although sometimes at a lower audio quality.”
• VoIP is available on many smartphones, personal computers, and on Internet
access devices. Calls and SMS text messages may be sent over 3G or Wi-Fi.
• Examples of VoIP include: Skype, Teamspeak, and Ventrilo.
• Skype can be classed as video conferencing f you have the camera on, but you
don’t need to have the camera on, you can just do it as a phone call (VoIP).
Methods – Internet Forums
http://www.fanforum.com/f326/
Internet forums are an online discussion made by people who want to talk about
there interests or voice there opinion on something and want other peoples views and
opinions.
There are forums on everything, for example singers/artists, fans make these if they
want to talk with other fans about there favourite artist touring or there album or
anything.
The applications it can be accessed on are any device that can connect/access the
internet: Smart phones, androids, tablets, home PC, laptop, iPad, blackberry.
Methods - Blogs
• Twitter is a weblog application. It can be accessible on an app on an iPhone or iPad
for example or if you don’t have a phone that or device that can download apps it
can also simply be used on the internet by searching ‘twitter’.
• Twitter was mainly made and is used for people who like keeping up with their
favourite celebrities and singer’s lives; it’s the best way to stay in the loop with
them and what is going on in the world. You can keep up to date on the not so
important celebrity gossip to the very serious world news. If anything happens in
the world or the celebrity world it’s usually always twitter that is the first source
and social media network to know about it and comment on it. Whether it’s a
celebrity death or just a rumour of a celebrity death or a hurricane in California,
everyone always usually hears about it first through twitter. Because it’s the easiest
accessible thing to source world news and gossip and was everyone’s sharing news
and gossip with each other talking about it. If you’re out in public or lay in the bath
you won’t hear about it on the TV but if you’re on your phone and see a tweet
about something then you can look further into it and put the TV on for the news
to see if it’s definitely true.
• Twitter can be accessed on any modern phone that has internet access, any device
such as laptops, computers, note books, iPads. With a PS3 or Xbox which is hooked
up to the TV, you can connect to the internet and can access it on your TV. So
basically anything that can connect to the internet.
Methods - Wikis
• “A website or database developed collaboratively by a community of users,
allowing any user to add and edit content.”
• Wikis can be accessed on all devices that are able to connect to the internet, so
iPhones, iPads, tablets, androids, laptops, PC’S etc.
• Here is an example of a wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging
• Most things you type in on your web browser if your researching it, it will usually
always come up with a wiki page dedicated to whatever it is you might be
researching. For example Doctor Who cast/characters over the years and will
provide facts and figures that doctor who nerds might have added and updated
from there own knowledge and interest.
Emails
• Hotmail is an email application, it can be accessed on any
application that access the internet for example: iPhone, iPad,
blackberry, notebook, laptop, a home pc/computer.
• Email is to send and receive emails to and from people. Whether it
be school work, course work, Uni work a message or anything, you
can attach photos and videos depending on the file size. If you
attach too many photos and there file size is too big to send then
the email wont send or might go through but will come back to you.
If you need to keep in contact with a work colleague, or a student
or contact anyone with an enquiry etc., most people will own an
email address, they're used a lot these days, your advised to make
them in school, college, Uni, work, it’s the best way to stay
connected in a less personal and more professional way, because
you cant add teachers on Facebook and twitter as that’s social
media.
IM (Instant messaging)
• “Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat which offers real-time text
transmission over the Internet.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging
• An example of instant messaging is Facebook inbox chat, it sends a
message to that person straight away and they have received it on there
phone/computer/other device within seconds of you sending it.
• IM can be accessed on iPad, iPhone, tablet, laptop, pc, android, smart
phone, anything that can connect to the internet to access sites like
Facebook, MSN messenger etc.
SMS (short messaging system)
• SMS is a (what application?) and can be accessed on
any mobile phone. Old or brand new, you don’t need
internet to access SMS.
• SMS is used to contact someone, it’s the most direct
way to do it by a message, 2nd most direct the first
being to call someone. SMS is usually used if you want
to have a conversation with someone, whether it is
long or short, to ask a quick question or to pass a
message on to or for someone else. But it doesn’t
seem to be the first option now that there’s BBM,
iMessage, twitter and Facebook. Facebook you can
directly message someone by ‘inboxing’ them and
twitter it’s called ‘Direct message’ or ‘DM’ for short.
MMS (Multimedia messaging system)
• Snapchat is MMS; this is an application that can only be accessed
on an iPhone or android.
• The whole reason for Snapchat is just a funnier way to chat to
friends, by sending a photo of something with a caption or a 15
second video with a caption. Once sending a video or picture to
someone or numerous people in your friends list they can only view
it for the limited time chosen by you, from 1 second to 10 seconds.
Snapchat releases a newer version once in a while able to download
from the app store. The newest version to date you can make a
‘story’ which means the photos/videos you take you can add to
your story so it’s available for anyone to view for as long as you
keep it up, the longest it stays up is 24 hours but you can delete it at
any time. You can also save the pictures/videos you take to your
Snapchat gallery, which will make it self its own file of saved
Snapchat pictures and videos on your phone. This is just a fun way
to capture and share moments with your friends
Video conferencing
• Video conferencing is a way of virtually talking to someone through video/audio.
You can visually see and her each other from both ends.
• An example of video conferencing is Skype, one person could be in Spain on
holiday and another could be back at home in Newcastle and as long as you have a
Skype account and have access to connecting to the internet you can do it, but the
quality (sound or image) might be bad depending on where you are in the world. It
might freeze or disconnect/cut off a few times.
• The applications Skype can be accessed on are: androids, iPhones, iPads, pc,
laptop. Basically most devices that can access the internet.
Virtual Communities
• “A virtual community is a social network of individuals who interact through specific
social media, potentially crossing geographical and political boundaries in order to
pursue mutual interests or goals.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_community
• The applications virtual communities can be accessed on are most devices that are able
to access the internet if not all, androids, iPhones, laptop, home PC, game consoles:
Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, iPad, tablet.
• An example of a virtual community that can be accessed online is Habbo Hotel, where
you make an account, you pick your character: male or female and can dress it up how
you want from a selection of clothes and even choose from face shapes, eyes colour,
hair colour, skin colour, hair style etc. You then wonder about different rooms and can
build and decorate your own room and approach and talk to other people. The whole
point I think is just for fun, not to actually get seriously talking to someone long term as
you don’t know each other at all and you don’t know what each other look like as it’s a
character you’ve made up, the more appropriate places online to talk to new people
are social media websites like twitter and Facebook as you reveal more of yourself on
there by tweets of what you do, what you like etc. you have a bio where you can
provide where your from and give brief sentence of a way to describe yourself or sum
yourself up (optional) and you have a profile picture, so its a more trusting kind of
social media but still not 100% safe.
Virtual communities
Virtual learning environments
• A virtual learning environment (VLE), or learning platform, is an e-learning education system
based on the web that gives access to in-person education by providing equivalent virtual
access to classes, class content, tests, homework, grades, assessments, and other resources
such as academic or museum website links.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_learning_environment
• VLE can be accessed on a home computer or laptop. Or on mobile called “M-Learning” (Mobile
learning)
Here’s a few examples of VLE’s, one that
I know of and use through college is Moodle.
Where all assignment briefs are stored for easy
access by students when at home or outside of
college. The teachers can pick and choose what
they want to put on Moodle, so they upload the
briefs for you. Meaning they aren't automatically
Stored on there, it is set up and controlled by your
teachers/tutors.
http://unchange.pbworks.com/w/page/13137095/Examples%20of%20VLEs

An example is the iPhone 3G. 3G phones commonly have two cameras since the technology allows the user to have video calls, for which a user-facing camera is required for capturing him/her. Unlike with Wi-Fi which you can get for free in hotspots, you need to be subscribed to a service provider to get 3G network connectivity. We often call this kind of service a data plan or network plan.” – So any modern phone that can registered to having 3G.”
  • 6. 3G - continued • “Your device is connected to the 3G network through its SIM card (in the case of a mobile phone) or its 3G data card (which can be of different types: USB, PCMCIA etc.), which are both generally provided/sold by the service provider. Through that, you get connected to the Internet whenever you are within a 3G network. Even if you are not in one, you can still use 2G or 2.5G services provided by the service provider.” http://voip.about.com/od/mobilevoip/p/3G.htm • 3G can be accessed on any basic phone that is able to be registered 3G by the service provider. • Example:
  • 7. 3G continued Here are some examples of phones that are 3G on sale on Amazon.
  • 8. 4G (4th general protocol) • 4G is “a mobile communications standard intended to replace 3G, allowing wireless Internet access at a much higher speed.” • Example: “They recently announced that the newest iPad will support 4G“ • A PC, tablet, laptop or a mobile device can all be connected via 4G wireless. • Here’s a little diagram showing how 4G works. • http://www.scribd.com/doc/22696415/4G-Technology
  • 9. GPRS (General pack radio service) • “GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a method of enhancing 2G phones to enable them to send and receive data more rapidly. With a GPRS connection, the phone is "always on" and can transfer data immediately, and at higher speeds.” - http://www.s21.com/gprs.htm • GPRS can be accessed on every mobile phone device. • Example: “The following example creates a GPRS network connection to Internet. The value set for DestId is the GUID that is defined in the CM_Networks configuration service provider. This GUID specifies the metanetwork to which the connection will be made.” • http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb737297.aspx
  • 10. Bluetooth • “Bluetooth is a standard for the short-range wireless interconnection of mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices.” • Example: Send (a photograph or other piece of data) from one electronic device to another via Bluetooth. • "I took a quick picture with my mobile and Bluetoothed it across to my laptop.“ – https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=R3-MU-byAoTY8g: fhnIDYDA#q=what+is+bluetooth • Bluetooth can be accessed on any mobile phone device.
  • 11. Broadband (ADSL) • “(Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line,) An ‘always-on’ ADSL phone line where the upload speed is different from the download speed. Usually the download speed is much greater.” - https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=ccaMU8voLsbX8gfU4oHoCQ#q=what+is+bro adband+ADSL • Example: • http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/guides/quick_guide_to_adsl/ • “ADSL is the name given to a broadband connection which works through the copper wires of your existing phone line. • When ADSL broadband is installed a microfilter is plugged into your phone connection. This separates the frequency of your phone line from that of your broadband connection. It is this that allows you to surf the web while chatting on the phone. • ADSL broadband comes through the BT phone line network direct to your house. This makes it the most popular type of broadband available, simply because it's so easy to sign up to. • All the technology is already in place too, so connecting up is really simple and the service is available right across the country.”
  • 12. Broadband (ADSL) • Nearly every home in the UK can now get ADSL broadband. It can be accessed on mobile devices (if able to connect to the internet) and other technologies such as laptop, home PC, iPad, tablet and also game consoles can connect up to it as its just a WiFi connection basically.
  • 13. VoIP (Voice over internet protocol) • “Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_over_IP • “Alternatively referred to as IP telephone or Internet phone, VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol and it enables users to make calls over the Internet. To make a call a telephone is connected to a network cable, versus a standard phone line or a call is made over a computer. This allows long distant phone calls to be cheaper, although sometimes at a lower audio quality.” • http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/v/voip.htm • VoIP is available on many smartphones, personal computers, and on Internet access devices. Calls and SMS text messages may be sent over 3G or Wi-Fi. • Examples of VoIP include: Skype, Teamspeak, and Ventrilo. • Skype can be classed as video conferencing f you have the camera on, but you don’t need to have the camera on, you can just do it as a phone call (VoIP).
  • 14. Methods – Internet Forums http://www.fanforum.com/f326/ Internet forums are an online discussion made by people who want to talk about there interests or voice there opinion on something and want other peoples views and opinions. There are forums on everything, for example singers/artists, fans make these if they want to talk with other fans about there favourite artist touring or there album or anything. The applications it can be accessed on are any device that can connect/access the internet: Smart phones, androids, tablets, home PC, laptop, iPad, blackberry.
  • 15. Methods - Blogs • Twitter is a weblog application. It can be accessible on an app on an iPhone or iPad for example or if you don’t have a phone that or device that can download apps it can also simply be used on the internet by searching ‘twitter’. • Twitter was mainly made and is used for people who like keeping up with their favourite celebrities and singer’s lives; it’s the best way to stay in the loop with them and what is going on in the world. You can keep up to date on the not so important celebrity gossip to the very serious world news. If anything happens in the world or the celebrity world it’s usually always twitter that is the first source and social media network to know about it and comment on it. Whether it’s a celebrity death or just a rumour of a celebrity death or a hurricane in California, everyone always usually hears about it first through twitter. Because it’s the easiest accessible thing to source world news and gossip and was everyone’s sharing news and gossip with each other talking about it. If you’re out in public or lay in the bath you won’t hear about it on the TV but if you’re on your phone and see a tweet about something then you can look further into it and put the TV on for the news to see if it’s definitely true. • Twitter can be accessed on any modern phone that has internet access, any device such as laptops, computers, note books, iPads. With a PS3 or Xbox which is hooked up to the TV, you can connect to the internet and can access it on your TV. So basically anything that can connect to the internet.
  • 16. Methods - Wikis • “A website or database developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content.” • Wikis can be accessed on all devices that are able to connect to the internet, so iPhones, iPads, tablets, androids, laptops, PC’S etc. • Here is an example of a wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging • Most things you type in on your web browser if your researching it, it will usually always come up with a wiki page dedicated to whatever it is you might be researching. For example Doctor Who cast/characters over the years and will provide facts and figures that doctor who nerds might have added and updated from there own knowledge and interest.
  • 17. Emails • Hotmail is an email application, it can be accessed on any application that access the internet for example: iPhone, iPad, blackberry, notebook, laptop, a home pc/computer. • Email is to send and receive emails to and from people. Whether it be school work, course work, Uni work a message or anything, you can attach photos and videos depending on the file size. If you attach too many photos and there file size is too big to send then the email wont send or might go through but will come back to you. If you need to keep in contact with a work colleague, or a student or contact anyone with an enquiry etc., most people will own an email address, they're used a lot these days, your advised to make them in school, college, Uni, work, it’s the best way to stay connected in a less personal and more professional way, because you cant add teachers on Facebook and twitter as that’s social media.
  • 18. IM (Instant messaging) • “Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat which offers real-time text transmission over the Internet.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging • An example of instant messaging is Facebook inbox chat, it sends a message to that person straight away and they have received it on there phone/computer/other device within seconds of you sending it. • IM can be accessed on iPad, iPhone, tablet, laptop, pc, android, smart phone, anything that can connect to the internet to access sites like Facebook, MSN messenger etc.
  • 19. SMS (short messaging system) • SMS is a (what application?) and can be accessed on any mobile phone. Old or brand new, you don’t need internet to access SMS. • SMS is used to contact someone, it’s the most direct way to do it by a message, 2nd most direct the first being to call someone. SMS is usually used if you want to have a conversation with someone, whether it is long or short, to ask a quick question or to pass a message on to or for someone else. But it doesn’t seem to be the first option now that there’s BBM, iMessage, twitter and Facebook. Facebook you can directly message someone by ‘inboxing’ them and twitter it’s called ‘Direct message’ or ‘DM’ for short.
  • 20. MMS (Multimedia messaging system) • Snapchat is MMS; this is an application that can only be accessed on an iPhone or android. • The whole reason for Snapchat is just a funnier way to chat to friends, by sending a photo of something with a caption or a 15 second video with a caption. Once sending a video or picture to someone or numerous people in your friends list they can only view it for the limited time chosen by you, from 1 second to 10 seconds. Snapchat releases a newer version once in a while able to download from the app store. The newest version to date you can make a ‘story’ which means the photos/videos you take you can add to your story so it’s available for anyone to view for as long as you keep it up, the longest it stays up is 24 hours but you can delete it at any time. You can also save the pictures/videos you take to your Snapchat gallery, which will make it self its own file of saved Snapchat pictures and videos on your phone. This is just a fun way to capture and share moments with your friends
  • 21. Video conferencing • Video conferencing is a way of virtually talking to someone through video/audio. You can visually see and her each other from both ends. • An example of video conferencing is Skype, one person could be in Spain on holiday and another could be back at home in Newcastle and as long as you have a Skype account and have access to connecting to the internet you can do it, but the quality (sound or image) might be bad depending on where you are in the world. It might freeze or disconnect/cut off a few times. • The applications Skype can be accessed on are: androids, iPhones, iPads, pc, laptop. Basically most devices that can access the internet.
  • 22. Virtual Communities • “A virtual community is a social network of individuals who interact through specific social media, potentially crossing geographical and political boundaries in order to pursue mutual interests or goals.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_community • The applications virtual communities can be accessed on are most devices that are able to access the internet if not all, androids, iPhones, laptop, home PC, game consoles: Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, iPad, tablet. • An example of a virtual community that can be accessed online is Habbo Hotel, where you make an account, you pick your character: male or female and can dress it up how you want from a selection of clothes and even choose from face shapes, eyes colour, hair colour, skin colour, hair style etc. You then wonder about different rooms and can build and decorate your own room and approach and talk to other people. The whole point I think is just for fun, not to actually get seriously talking to someone long term as you don’t know each other at all and you don’t know what each other look like as it’s a character you’ve made up, the more appropriate places online to talk to new people are social media websites like twitter and Facebook as you reveal more of yourself on there by tweets of what you do, what you like etc. you have a bio where you can provide where your from and give brief sentence of a way to describe yourself or sum yourself up (optional) and you have a profile picture, so its a more trusting kind of social media but still not 100% safe.
  • 24. Virtual learning environments • A virtual learning environment (VLE), or learning platform, is an e-learning education system based on the web that gives access to in-person education by providing equivalent virtual access to classes, class content, tests, homework, grades, assessments, and other resources such as academic or museum website links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_learning_environment • VLE can be accessed on a home computer or laptop. Or on mobile called “M-Learning” (Mobile learning) Here’s a few examples of VLE’s, one that I know of and use through college is Moodle. Where all assignment briefs are stored for easy access by students when at home or outside of college. The teachers can pick and choose what they want to put on Moodle, so they upload the briefs for you. Meaning they aren't automatically Stored on there, it is set up and controlled by your teachers/tutors. http://unchange.pbworks.com/w/page/13137095/Examples%20of%20VLEs
