TASK 3
The Hunger Games MockingJay Part 2 teaser trailer follows the general idea of
how teaser trailers should be perfectly. Being a large franchise the trailer may
attract some of the audience members but most are passionate followers. So the
teaser trailers and done to inform and excite the fans of the series and build the
“hype” around the forthcoming film.
One way Hunger Games MockingJay Part 2 teaser trailer builds the audience up is
the speed of which the teaser trailer starts and ends on. Following the general rule
of going slow at the beginning and speeding the shots up as they progress. Often
at the beginning that are very long clips and have large transition periods. (Fade to
blacks in the case of this trailer) This pace then starts to pick up and build further
along the clip. This builds the tension for the audience and starts to get the
excitement going as it progresses further into the trailer.
HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY
PART 2 (TEASER TRAILER)
As well as the pace of the shots that’s changes throughout the trailer, the camera shots
change as well. At the beginning the camera shots used are mostly establishing shots. These
set the scene for the audience and allow them to know what is going on in the clip, letting
them take in the setting, props and characters that are there. These shots are often held for
a long time to make sure the audience can take in what is going on.
After the scene has been set, many of the other shots are close ups or panning shots of the
characters in the trailer. This shows the audience how many people are in the shot and for
them to be able to take in what is happening.
One of the final shots is a extreme close up of the main characters “sign” this is well
known throughout the franchise and lets the audience who have seen the other films
understand what is happening.
The very final shot is a close up that slowly riases and comes out of the characters face.
This allows the audience to see how many people are behind the character and suggests to
the audience how many people are supporting the main character and are behind her fight.
This gets the audience excited and want to know what they are up against. Hopefully
meaning they will go and watch the film in cinema.
CONT…
One other major aspect of trailers that the Hunger Games MockingJay Part 2
uses is inter titles. Inter titles are often used to get extra messages across or
information that the audience may want to know.
This is done really well in the hunger games as it is used to get the audience
going and to get them excited about what could be happening in the film. As
it has quite power and strong words such as “freedom” it gets the audience
excited as throughout all the other films it has been something that they have
been fighting for. As it comes up as the first inter title it makes the audience
want to know what it is to due with and why it has been put up.
CONT…
I have chosen to analyse a slightly older film trailer to show some of the
differences between then and now. The older trailers would have been put at
the beginning of other films that are in the cinema and possibly short clips
may appear on television. But as the internet was not as easy to get onto as it
is now it wasn’t able to aid in the marketing as much.
The Shrek trailer relies heavily on the voice over to explain to the audience
what is happening in the trailer and the backstory to the film. This was
common in films of the time but something that is not as common in modern
day films. The voice over gives the audience the information it needs, often
this is not enough for them, which makes them start to ask questions and
think about the film even more. Making them want to go and see the film to
have the questions answered.
SHREK (2001)
One aspects that does occur in Shrek and modern day films is the setting of
the scene and the slower paced camera shots at the beginning of the trailer. At
the beginning of Shrek it is slow and establishing shots are used to show the
audience what is going on and allow them to get their minds into the film.
Then as the plot lines is shown and some of the more intense shots of the
film are shown, the camera moves faster and the shots are a lot quicker. This
starts to build tension for the audience and excitement for them as they can
see that it is moving fast.
One other aspect that Shrek uses well due to it being a comedy is humour.
Mid way through some of the high action fast scenes, a small clip of humour
interrupts it and makes the audience laugh. This is good as it shows the funny
side of the film and what they can expect in the cinema.
CONT…
Throughout the trailer there is only three inter titles as the voice over covers a
lot of the main information. Which include setting the scene and the plot as
the main characters which are important to include as it can attract audience
members who may be a fan of certain actors/actresses.
The three inter titles that are included are the animation of “dreamworks”
showing the audience who have created the film and behind it. This is put in
for recognition for the company and to attract audience members who may
have watched dreamworks other films and may find they may enjoy this one.
The other intertitles are the name of the film at the end so the audience know
and the release date of the film. This gives them any extra information that
they may be wanting to know.
CONT…
The wolf of wall street does follow some main stream conventions of trailers.
However, it starts at a completely different pace to most other films. This
unique start sets the pace of the film and what the main film is about straight
away. By going fast from the off it shows to the audience that the film is high
paced and full of action. This fast, cut editing and extreme close ups is then
supported by fast tempo music. This backs up the audience that is its high
paced and full of action and lets them know straight away. The music is also
very load and in the audiences face which suggests the attitude of the movie.
The intertitles at the beginning of the clip also back this up as they are only
of for a second, they appear with a load bang and disappear almost
immediately. Setting the scene that film film will be fast paced and full of
action.
THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013)
The wolf of wall street is very clever in the way it gets the plot line across to the audience.
Using a mixture of a voice over and dialogue from the film. The voice over is normally a
older way of getting the plot across. However, due to the style of the film, being a fictional
documentary of the main characters life it is able to work well. It is able to excite the
audience and is able to get them to start thinking about that is happening and how he is
able to live such a crazy life. Building the ‘hype’ and getting them to go to the cinema to
watch it.
The intertitles used throughout the piece have also been used very well, the first set show
the main characters of the film. Telling the audience their names and what awards they have
won. This creates a interest with their fans and gives the audience more reasoning to believe
that it will be a good film and worth watching.
The second set of interitles gets the audience questioning why it is coming up and what will
come after. The repetition of “more” makes the audience want to know ‘more of what?’
Hooking their thoughts and their interest. Keeping them hooked into the film.
CONT…
From watching multiple trailers it is clear to see that most trailers follow a
similar lay out and way of doing it; bar the odd exception. Most trailers seem
to start off slow, with long establishing shots, setting the scene and letting the
audience know what is going on. Once this is done, normally intertitles come
in, showing the audience who is in the film and who produced it. Once that is
done, the pace normally starts to build up. Showing the audience some of the
action that goes oon and starts to get them thinking why that is happening.
What is causing this action. By getting these thoughts into the audiences head
it makes them possibly want to go and see the film in the cinema. Which
means more money for the film at box office. Which is the main reason for
the film in the first place.
