Task 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product
and why?
What Is Distribution?
Film distribution is the process of getting a film to be watched
by an audience, and often is accompanied by film promotion.
Examples of major film distributors include:
• Warner Bros. Pictures
• 20th Century Fox
• Universal Pictures
• Columbia Pictures
Which Distribution Company's
would be Interested in our
Film?
Due to our film being an independent production, its unlikely
to interest a major distribution company such as 20th Century
Fox or Warner Bros. Pictures as they specialize in
blockbusters, rarely distributing independent films like ours.
Therefore, our film is more likely to entice a smaller, British
distribution company, such as Curzon Artificial Eye, who
would be interested in distributing our film as it specializes in
the distribution of British films, and the horror and thriller
elements in our film make it appealing as successful films
that they produce have these qualities.
Is your film going to appeal to
UK audiences only?
Our film would appeal to UK audiences as our cast is British,
making them relatable to the audience. Moreover, UK
audiences would like how our film is set in the UK, as most
films are set abroad.
The film would also appeal to a wider audience as our films
genre (psychological thriller), appeals to audiences around
the world, as it’s a very popular type of film that people like to
watch globally.
Marketing Strategies, Release Strategies
and
Exhibition Options
One way that we could market our film would be through social
media as creating a Facebook and/or Twitter page is a good way to
spread the film around large groups of people. Moreover, creating a
film trailer would also be a good way to entice people to watch the
film, as it can leave people wanting the watch the full film in order to
find out what happens after the trailer.
The film could be exhibited at a film festival, such as the Edinburgh
International Film Festival, as they often have a large public
attendance, who can be interested in the film.
Our film would be released around the Halloween period as it is a
psychological thriller which has horror elements, therefore making
the period of its release more suitable. Although this a congested
period for film releases, as our film is a psychological thriller,
therefore making it unique among the horror movies released at
this time.
Self-distribution
Self-distribution involves the filmmakers distributing the film
independently. This would be down to how difficult it is for an
independent film to be distributed by a major distribution
company like Universal Pictures or Columbia Pictures, as the
chances of a film getting distributed by one these company’s
is unlikely.
Although self-distribution lets the filmmaker keep all the
money they make as well as not having the name of a big
distribution company overshadowing the film, self-distribution
is also difficult as the filmmaker has to establish everything
themselves as well as having to create links with film
company's in order to help advertise the film.
