Task 4
By Alistair and Samuel
Digital video
When film first came around it was all analog and used physical film which was light
sensitive. A old film camera would have a large box sat on top which would have the
film tape and would move it from one reel to another. Digital film cameras record
directly onto a hard drive which would be considerably smaller than a box of film
tape on top. The first film to be completely made with digital recording equipment
was Star Wars episode One the phantom menace and episode II: attack of the clones
using a Sony HDW-F900, and both were shot with full hd film.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Digital
video.
Advantages Disadvantages
Allows for storing on a solid state drive,
meaning does not take up much space.
Slightly more time consuming, takes a lot of
time to render.
A benefit in digital video editing is the ability
to enhance and improve light and sound
issues that couldn't be avoided.
Storage is more expensive
On Demand
Video on demand are systems which allow users to select and watch/listen to video
or audio content such as movies and TV shows when they choose to, rather than
having to watch at a specific broadcast time. These can often also be downloaded in
order to watch at a later date, without internet access.
An example of this is BBC Iplayer, that allows you to watch shows on the BBC
network at any time.
The first video on demand (VOD) systems used tapes as the source of video streams.
GTE started as a trial in 1990 . By 1992 VOD servers were supplying previously
encoded digital video from disks. Internet on demand started
On Demand Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages Disadvantages
Allows consumer to always be able to
watch shows and movies they enjoy at any
point.
Often has an additional cost as well as a
TV licence.
3D
3D tech has existed for a long time, The earliest confirmed 3D film shown to an
audience was The Power of Love, which premiered at the Ambassador Hotel
Theater in Los Angeles on 27 September 1922, using a blue green two strip method,
where anaglyph glasses of two colours created the illusion of depth.
Past the 2000’s, 3D made a small resurgence as a gimmick in films such as “Spykids”
(2003) or “Sharkboy and Lavagirl” (2005) but did not see mainstream resurgence
until the late 2000’s. Many credit the resurgence of 3D to James Cameron’s “Avatar”
That released with 3D options and used new 3D technology, such as sleaker black
glasses and new 3D projectors installed in many theaters.
Advantages and Disadvantages of 3D
Advantages Disadvantages
Results in a more immersive
experience for the viewer
Movies cost more to make in 3D
3D DVD’s cost more money,
meaning more money for
companies
Can cause eye strain.
Does not allow for the use of
perspective
High Definition
High definition technically only refers to video that is in a higher resolution than
standard definition generally any video image with considerably more than 480
horizontal lines or 576 horizontal lines is considered high-definition.
Other resolutions include:
1080p: 1920×1080p: 2,073,600 pixels (~2.07 megapixels) per frame
720p: 1280×720p: 921,600 pixels (~0.92 MP) per frame
DVB created first the standard for DVB-S digital satellite TV, DVB-C digital cable TV
and DVB-T digital terrestrial TV. These broadcasting systems can be used for both
SDTV and HDTV.
Advantages and Disadvantages of HD
Advantages Disadvantages
Better viewing experience for consumer Takes more time to stream HD footage,
requiring buffering on slower connections
The internet
In the 1990’s the internet as we know it today was first established and connected the world digitally. It soon
became the largest collection of human knowledge ever. Each year, from when it first started, the internet
has been evolving and getting better and becoming more available to more people films are able to take
advantage of this and can promote their film on on a variety of social media platforms and websites. As well
as this review websites such as rotten tomatoes and IMDB which have online reviews for movies which are
sometimes reviewed by regular people to have more of a balanced opinion of the film.
Softwares such as Netflix and Amazon prime are internet linked and have a wide large collection of films and
tv programs that can be watched whenever the subscriber chooses too. With this use of internet
connectivity, video piracy has become a bigger problem as it is easy to access the same content illegally
which doesn't help the video makers.
The Internet Pros and Cons
Pros: Cons:
Allows for streaming, paying for and
watching movies in the comfort of your own
home
Far far easier to obtain films Illegally via
torrenting websites
Easier to discover new shows or movies
you would enjoy via social networking
Less people are likely to consume
traditional media such as television due to
having more content available for free
online.
Easier to advertise your media through the
internet
In hosting things on the internet, there are
always privacy and security issues, sites
can be hacked and changed by someone
with enough knowledge
Allows for Multimedia projects, in which a
single format can have multiple media’s
attached to it
