TASK 3
WHAT IS DISTRIBUTION

• Distribution is the Process of
making a product or service
available for use or consumption by
a consumer or business user, using
direct means, or using indirect
means intermediaries
EXAMPLES OF DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES
•

Example of Large Distribution Companies include:

•

20th Century Fox

•

Universal Studios

•

Paramount Pictures

•

A Couple of Independent Film Companies include:

•

Lionsgate

•

Pathe Distribution
ARE ANY FILM DISTRIBUTORS LIKELY TO BE
INTERESTED IN YOU FILM? EXPLAIN WHY.
• The type of film that we have produced is a thriller.

• Another Thriller that has been produced and that we
based our opening sequence on was Distributed by
Paramount Pictures
• So I think that Paramount would be likely to want to be
included in this film because it is similar to what they
have been included in before. For example Paranormal
Activity.
WHAT AUDIENCE APPEAL DOES MY FILM HAVE
AND WHY?
• I think that my film has a much larger appeal than to just UK audiences. I
believe this because the film is in English and is a Thriller so I think that other
English speaking countries would enjoy this sort of film to be shown in their
country.
MARKETING STRATEGIES
•

Let consumers dictate distribution: what our film would do would be to create a den ad
page and once it has reached a certain number of demands the distributor would release
the movies in a reasonable radius of all the fans who demanded the movie by providing
their age and zip code.

•

Don‟t waste money on large-scale TV campaigns when you can talk directly to your fans:
Using social media as a marketing vehicle as well as a market-research vehicle seems to
be the best way to get the best information for the research in your film. Types of social
media that you could use would be websites such as „Facebook‟ and „Twitter‟.

•

Don‟t create false hype: Be honest with your customers to get the best view across to
them so more people want to go watch it. For example “Paranormal Activity‟s” theatrical
trailer and TV spots are focused more on marketing the audience‟s terrified reactions to
the movie itself.
SELF DISTRIBUTION
•

Advantages to self-distribution

You can retain full control and rights over your film, giving you the choice over where your film
is shown.
You don't have to give a cut of the money made from any sales of your film to a distributor.
•

Disadvantages to self-distribution

It can be a full-time job in itself as it can be very time consuming chasing buyers and sales
and filling in paperwork.
It may limit your options for sales as distributors have established relationships with buyers
and many buyers may only be interested in packages of films.
You need to be very legally savvy and make sure you're not signing away rights to your film
that'll prevent you from showing it elsewhere.
