Task 5
Evaluation
Thaddeus O’Connor-Dunphie
• I gathered my research from the internet on websites such
as Games radar. This gave me a good understanding and
knowledge of how a good gaming magazine should look like
and it is what I used as inspiration when creating my own. I
also found many other game reviews however I then
narrowed down to search on reviews about Fifa 16 because
this was the game that I was focusing on so I used Google
and typed in Fifa 16 reviews. I then found various reviews of
the game where I then learnt much more about that game
and this also helped me with research about the game such
as history, flaws of the game and positives of the game etc.
• When developing my ideas of what I was going to base my product on I
had peer assessment by my peers in the class and they gave me very
good feedback on how I could improve my ideas, teachers also pitched
in and helped me by giving me feedback and tips on improving. For
example my first original idea was going to be a magazine that covers
both reviews of games and films however with good feedback from my
peers and teacher they told me I should just focus on one as it will be
much easier to work on so I followed this advice and decided to create
my magazine about games.
As you can see from my mood board
my initial ideas was going to be
reviews on both games and films
however from good feedback I then
just decide to focus on games and
target Fifa 16
• When writing up my magazine I did this away from college and at home.
I had inspiration from a review on Fifa 16 by Games radar and this
helped me out a lot when creating my review. I wrote up my magazine
and tried to make it entertaining to read such as making the game
sound more exciting saying things such as midfield battles and every
pass counts etc. I tried to make it sound very competitive and fun. Then
I created two adaptations of my magazine for both adults and
teenagers. When I was targeting teenagers I made the magazine more
suited towards them by shortening words and not using very big words I
made it more simpler to read. Then when I was targeting adults and
older ages I used more sophisticated words and tried to make it seem
entertaining from their perspectives so that they can also enjoy it. This
is because adults may think that games are for children so I made my
magazine entertaining towards them by saying things such as any
football fan will love this game no matter the age etc.
Pre production Portfolio
• The pre production portfolio that I produced helped me very much in
planning all of my journalism. It helped me plan all the logistics,
location considerations, time frame considerations, the level of
organisation that was required, resources and much much more.
Having all of these planned out made it very easy for me to do each
one by one and putting it all in order made it much better for me to
do like ticking off a list. From all of the resources I planned out all the
equipment which I was going to use and this made much simpler for
me because If would have not planned it all out I would have been
under pressure from what equipment that I need, but because I
planned it all out I had a much convenient time getting all of my
resources and setting up timelines etc.
In Design Skills
• I decided to use In Design over Photoshop as I find it more easier to create a basic
template for a magazine on this software
• I started out creating a basic template with columns, and then I added headers and
subheadings. I also filled in the columns with random text to give me a basic idea of
how my magazine will look like with text.
• I then decided to add a second page to my magazine and split it in half, When it came down to my final
idea I discarded that idea however this is what my magazine would of looked like had I used two pages.
The picture under the headline is what I was going to use as my logo for my gaming reviews. And the
other photos are of Fifa 16 and hands playing on a controller which is the photo I took inspiration from
and combined hand on a controller playing Fifa and managing to fit it all into one photograph.
Then I wrote my own article review of Fifa 16, I took inspiration from other gaming
reviews on the internet. I had not taken my own photographs at this point in time
creating this mock up so I used pictures from the internet
• Then I created my idea, I decide to discard the two page idea and just use one being the front
cover, I added in two of the photos which I took myself and added the logo of the cartoon
with a headset under the heading of my article.
Then when I had to adapt my review for a specific age group I
changed up my magazine and changed the text so that it was
only talking about teenagers
• I then did the same but this time I adapted my magazine towards adults, and just like the one for
teenagers I changed the text so that it suited adults.
I then changed the layout of my final idea and combined the
adaptation of my review for teenagers with the original
review and labelled the pages. I then Added a name of my
magazine and called it “Gamers play on.” I then moved my
pictures around so that I can put all of my text into the
columns. Then I decreased the size of the writing and put it
all neatly in the columns I also added page numbers and the
date at the bottom of each page.
Storing written
material• I did all of my work for Journalism electronically meaning
that I did it all on the computer. I kept it all safe and saved
them with appropriate names and put them in secure
folders. The folder which I kept all of my work in was called
Richard Magazine.
And in this folder named Richard Magazine is where I saved all of
my work safe and secure where I can edit at any time.
