Task 5 research summary

Research Summary Conventions of Layout: The layout of the front covers for this magazine is very uniform and similar, the logo and name of the magazine is in the top right corner, this is the conventional position for the logo or name of the magazine to go as it is the first thing that people see. There is a large image of an artist that covers the majority of the front cover on every issue of this magazine as it draws readers to the magazine if they see an artist they enjoy listening to. Around the image is various other bits of text showing off what is in the magazine and who is on the front cover, these are placed in proportion and in contrast with the image so the person in the picture isn’t covered up by any/much text. This is fairly conventional because the artist can be the main drawing point for some readers to pick up the magazine and it needs to have a clear picture to entice even more readers. The contents page for this magazine has a very structured layout with one or two columns of text on one side and a gallery of pictures on the other, this page is structured in a way so it looks aesthetically pleasing but also so it is useful in helping readers find the pages in which they want to read. This is conventional because most magazines have a column of text which directs people to articles as well as images which entice readers to read articles in which they wouldn’t normally read. The double page spreads put into this magazine follows a basic layout in which on one page there is a large image and a small caption or body of text and on the other page there is the featuring article and sometimes even another small article to read as well. This is a conventional thing that is seen in many other magazines and it is a basic layout that is followed throughout this genre of music magazine especially because it is simple and clean.
- 2. Conventions of Genre: The conventions of genre are similar in each of the magazine pages with the way the artists dress and the shot types that are used in this magazine. Conventionally the artists tend to dress very casually with t-shirts and jeans, sometimes with a jacket over the top, this shows them as simple, common people however there are some artists who take a more unconventional route with their costume and wear helmets/masks to disguise their real identity because they want to remain anonymous, they still keep with the genre in a way as the helmets they wear are oversized and have lots of bright lights and different colours, also they are not like anything seen before which gives each of these artists their own identity and makes them stand out from the rest. This shows the genre as being bright and full of energy as well as full of different types of people as they all have their own styles and preferences. Conventions of representation: The conventions of representation are fairly similar across all of the magazine issues because the artists are all represented by the way they dress but also, within the DJ Genre they are represented by subgenre’s of this music making them a little different to other types of music such as Grime. The artists are all represented as being full of energy and this is shown in some of the clothes they wear and the music that they produce. How this information will be useful: This information is useful because it shows me what aspects of conventional magazine layouts, genre’s, representation is used in a market leading magazine for this music genre. This information will help me to produce my own magazine elements.
