Task 6
Hip-hop’s origin
Hip-hop really started to become noticed in the 1970’s from the bronx in New York. Hip-hop
was concentrated on political issues and was rapped by artists who disagreed with political
and governmental issues. It originated from African Americans.
The Griots of West Africa are a group of traveling singers or poets who's lyrical style is very
similar to the rappers in hip-hop. Rapping, also referred to as emceeing is when the artist
talks lyrically often with a backing beat.
Hip hop arose during the 1970s when block parties became more and more popular in New
York City, especially in the Bronx. Block parties included DJ’s who would play popular music
in this culture like soul. Techniques for turn tabling, such as mixing, scratching and beat
juggling eventually developed along with base that could be rapped over by artists.
Jamaican immigrants were a huge influence on the development of hip-hop inspired by the
Jamaican tradition of toastin Kool Herc & the Herculoids were the first renown hip-hop
artists , however the number of MC’s and DJ increased hugely through time.

These artists are considered some of the most famous artists out there. Eminem, Jay-z and
Kanye west are all active artists who are performing still today. However, Tupac Shakur
(2pac) was shot and killed on September the 16th 1996. this is no shock in Hip-hop and
violence is quite a large theme of the music. Aggressive covers of hip-hop magazines and
angry lyrics are often involved in Hip-hop music. I intend to make my magazine look cool
and stylish like the images in my previous slide show. However, I do not intend to make it
look aggressive and violent as I want my magazine to also be appropriate for young
teenagers
