Achieve Universal Primary
Education
Isabel Maestas
The Importance
And
The Why
The target of this goal was by 2015, children
everywhere, will be able to complete a full
course of primary schooling
The importance of the United Nations second goal of
Achieving Universal Primary Education is because around
57 millions primary school children do not attend school.
Over 4 out of 5 children live in rural areas. The urban-rural
knowledge and education divide is today’s main barrier to
achieving universal primary education by 2015
This topic highly resonates with me because I grew up in a
big family in a rural area and we always had the privilege of
being able to attend primary school.
With this privilege it is important to understand the
privilege of this education, and with the ability to learn is
compromised by hunger and malnutrition (food and
agriculture organization of the United Nations, n.d.).
What is Happening Close to Home?
The Washington public school system operates within district
boundaries and are governed by locally elected school boards
and superintendents.
In 2013 Washington had 1,051,694 students enrolled in a total
of 2,3700 school in 322 school districts
Public schools in Washington state have declined by about
31,000 students compared to last year (Associated Press,
2020).
Data from the office of the Superintendent of Public
Instruction released Wednesday shows there was a 2.82%
decrease in K-12 school enrollment this September compared
to September 2019 (Associated Press, 2020).
Local Resources:
As of 2015, school choice options in Washington have
changed including: charter schools, homeschooling,
online learning, private schools and two mandatory
public school open enrollment policies
There is also resources through state agencies
(Washington Office of Superintendent of Public
Instruction) and unions (Washington Education
Association, National Education Association).
We can also vote in local election
How to Help
The greatest contribution you or I can make is staring by
understanding what the problem is and what a quality
education is.
However, the greatest contribution is providing our time and
education to others.
FAO is the UN lead agency for Education for Rural People
and they partner with the government, civil society, and
private sector. They also provide technical assistance to
member countries for implementing school gardens and
school-feeding programmes.
We can partner with these groups to volunteer and
encourage those who may be able to donate to these
programs. I am someone who does not have a lot of money
to give, but I would donate resources such as plants and
seeds, and volunteers to plant gardens and the feeding
programs.
Social Media
Most likely if a student is unable to attend primary
school is due to financial hardship and having to take
care of their families. They are typically unable to
afford phones.
Social media has the ability to post locations, events,
and organizations. This is useful to spread the word
about how to help schools, if they are having
financial troubles which influences more children to
avoid school.
