Skills/Standards Based Grading & The Rolling Gradebook
What it is NOT What it IS
● Assessing students on ALL state standards. ● Determining the most ESSENTIAL standards
to assess
● An (arbitrary) average of student progress
over 9 weeks
● The documentation of growth over
time/year
● Units taught and “forgotten” ● A built in reassessment system
● Grades organized around assessment types ● Grades organized around essential
skills/standards
● Teaching only skills and no content ● Teaching content through skills
● Final grade represents an average of
students’ performance (including lack of
skill/content knowledge at the beginning of
the year).
● Final grade represents students’ end-of-year
mastery - what they know/understand/can
do at the end of the year.

● Students are scored on a

● A score of a “3”
represents mastery of
the skill(s).
FCPS Grading During Virtual Learning
March 2020
No Zeros
Retakes and Redos; no late penalty
Essential Content Only graded assignments as 1, 2, 3
Students’ Final Grade will be the highest of the following:
● Avg of Qtrs 1, 2, & 3
● Avg of Qtrs 1, 2, & 3 with a minimum 1 grade distribution increase
● 1st Semester Grade
20-21
Grades based on standards (essential skills)
Maximums set on outside of school work
Monday asynchronous days
Two Catch Up Days per quarter
Retakes and Redos extended time to complete assignments (no penalty)
Minimum grading (50-100) and 4.0 scale
EOY Grading
○ NMs for Fs
○ Pass for A,B,C,D grades
Teaching and Learning Conditions
Content was adjusted during virtual learning to include only essential skills
Going from 9th grade honors courses to 11th Grade AP courses is a massive transition
College Board is not modifying AP content or AP exams
Teachers must fill those critical gaps, while continuing to move students forward
Other Important Outcomes
Support Students/Lower Stressors of Grades
Students having clear understanding of what is expected of them-no gotchas or moving targets
Students having opportunities to always try again and improve-no finite grades until the end
Students getting actionable feedback on their progress toward growth
Students having more control over their learning
Next Steps:
● S-Rotation: a tracking plan to account for contract tracing and movement
● Wolverine Wellness Days: combo of work/catch up days and stress reducing activities
● Volunteer Hallway/Bathroom Monitor Program

Schoology and 4.0 Rubrics
Spanish for Careers Applications, AP Spanish, and Spanish 5
Folders organized by Quarters, Weeks….
And Days...
Each day has the agenda and materials (documents,
videos, ect.) used during class.
SIS has a code in each assignment for the student to be
able to find the missing assignment on schoology.
Example: The code 5.10 let’s the student know that we did that
assignment on Week #5 Day #10.
Colors mark the skill for the assignment.
Pink=Speaking Blue=Listening Yellow=Reading
Green=Writing
World Languages grades by skills: Reading, Writing,
Listening, and Speaking
We have a point system to weight between a classwork
(1pt), formative (2pt), and summative (3pt) assessment.
Nothing is graded on just completion.
Students are allowed to redo any assignment.
Late work does not have penalty and students can turn it in
up to the last day of the quarter.
