 Who is the net generation??? Born in 1980’s Experiential learners Social networkers Instantaneous – Simultaneous- Immediacy Open to diversity, differences, and sharing Multi-taskers
Net Generation has not known life without the internet. A computer is not considered technology to them. 8-18 year olds:  96% have been online   74% access at home     61% use internet daily 76% of 12 year olds have a cell phone 13-17 year olds send 2000 text messages monthly
Survey findings from CDW-Government (1000 participants from national survey) High school students say technology is vital to their education and their future, but schools are not meeting their needs  Faculty members use technology to teach, but many students lack opportunities to use technology in class  To improve, districts should focus on developing 21st-century skills and bringing technology to class
Students use technology extensively as a learning tool and expect to use technology in college and the workforce   84% say technology is important* to their ability to study and work on class assignments in  high school.    94% anticipate using technology to complete assignments in college.   While 60% of students say that faculty members regularly use technology to teach, only 26% of students say they are encouraged to use technology throughout the day  One-half (53%) of faculty say they do not hold any of their classes in a 21st-century classroom
Personal use versus Educational use (CDW-G survey)
21 st  Century Vision Mobile/hand-held devices as learning tools iPads or laptops for every class (6-8 min. per class) Technology funded/sponsored by corporate/business Curriculum  viewed through the lens of 21 st  Century Skills and Themes (ncdpi) Learning  focused on creative thinking and the creation of “products” using technology that illustrates student mastery of content Learning activities  that provide real-time assessment feedback and access to data and internet resources
Implementing the Vision - Shar Beck / Elementary level - Utilize the technology currently installed to its fullest potential.  (smartboards, laptops, elmos, IVC systems, fully furnished labs in all Davie County Schools funded by  Mebane Foundation ) Maintain financial support to provide current updated technology within each school. Requires continued  advanced  training for teachers and encouragement to have teachers integrate technology. Provide students  more opportunities  to explore and become engaged with the available tools.
Implementing the Vision - cont’d Change structures of classroom to technology-rich and learner-centered in K-5 by providing access to newer modes of technology. Add focus on inquiry-based learning and ability to gain global access. Exploring ways to achieve basic educational curriculum in advanced ways to keep students engaged, stimulated, and challenged. Informing teachers on how to use technology to manage and assess student progress data. Providing opportunities for students to teach technology uses to teachers, peers and family.  (after-hours access)

21 st  Century Professional Development characteristics Highlights ways teachers can seize opportunities for integrating 21st century skills, tools and teaching strategies into their classroom practice — and help them identify what activities they can replace/de-emphasize  Balances direct instruction with project-oriented teaching methods  Illustrates how a deeper understanding of subject matter can actually enhance problem-solving, critical thinking, and other 21st century skills  Enables 21st century professional learning communities for teachers that model the kinds of classroom learning that best promotes 21st century skills for students

Implementing the Vision Require technological lessons/projects (perhaps a minimum number of assignments) from each teacher every semester Monitor student success/gains in content mastery through use of formative and summative data Make adjustments to equipment, professional development, and resources based on feedback Provide feedback to teachers and students to build their capacities as 21 st  Century learners Identify programs and practices with proven gains in student learning; train appropriate individuals so that they can use/do same for the same gains
