Implementing Web-based
electronic portfolios in
second-year advertising
By Kenton Larsen
Objective

• Implement Web-based electronic portfolios
for second-year advertising students in the
  Creative Communications program at Red
  River College in Winnipeg

                                                KENTON LARSEN 2
Rationale: Why?

• Macro level: improve the class in general by integrating
  technology
• Micro level: students will be better prepared and motivated to
look for work at the end of their education
• Advertising is the perfect subject matter for this:
  • It rewards visual thinking, creative conception, and big-idea
    generation
  • Advertisers are interested in being at the forefront of
technology as their jobs demand it

                                                        KENTON LARSEN 3
Rationale: When?

 • Implement an e-portfolio assignment at the beginning of second
   year
 • Encourage students to regularly update their creative work for
review by their instructor throughout the school year in
   preparation for graduation and employment

“A webfolio system used extensively throughout all levels of education supports
continuous curriculum improvement, allowing all educators to share teaching and learning
strategies, learning resources, and assignments with their colleagues. A Web-based
system organizes a student’s work and presents it in a student webfolio, displaying not
only the artifacts but also the associated assignments and activities
                                                        – Transcendent Man Ray Kurzweil

                                                                 KENTON LARSEN 4
Purpose of Lesson Plans

Lesson plan #1:
• Students create an online portfolio of
  original work that continues throughout
  the school year
Lesson plan #2:
• Students create an online curation
portfolio to collect, filter, and share online
content in the subject matter, or students’
area of interest or experience throughout
  the school year

                                                   KENTON LARSEN 5
Lesson Plan #1: Portfolio of Original Work
1. Lesson starts with e-portfolio discussion, what they are and how and why we’ll be
   using them
2. In-class tutorial presentation, and an online tutorial posted on the Lore course
management system for future reference covering:
    Effective resumes
    File management
    Digital formats
    Reflective writing
    Privacy
    Professionalism
    Free speech

3. Assign a creative assignment, which allows students to start their portfolios and
   learn how the system works

                                                                  KENTON LARSEN 6
Lesson Plan #1: Technology
Technology and resources involved:
1. Students have a choice of software to set-up an online portfolio:
      Dropr (http://dropr.com)
      Behance (http://www.behance.net)
 Available as a mobile app
      Wix (http://www.wix.com)
 Available as a mobile app
2. Other software required:
      Adobe InDesign (design software)
 MS Word (word processing software)

                                                             KENTON LARSEN 7
Lesson Plan #1: Creative Assignment

Purpose: This first assignment will help students start their
online portfolio
• Create an ad designed to persuade people to enjoy something
  they already own
• The ad can be:
  • socially conscious or for a cause (PSA-style) on behalf of a
known company (commercial- or institutional-style) or with no
    sponsor named (guerrilla-style)

                                                     KENTON LARSEN 8
Lesson #1: Creative Assignment

Instructions:
1. Write and lay out an 8.5 X 11 poster
   format ad using InDesign
2. Upload your assignment and at least
five assignment from first year, and
share the link with me through my
   email address
3. Nurture your portfolio by continuing to
update and sharing the link with me,
so that I can provide you with
   feedback

                                             KENTON LARSEN 9
Lesson Plan #2: Online Curation Portfolio

Lesson outline:
1. Lesson starts with discussion about curation and its purpose
2. In-class tutorial presentation, and an online tutorial posted on the
Lore course management system for future reference covering:
 The issues surrounding curation, including one person’s
curation might be another person’s plagiarism or copyright
     infringement
3. Assignment is to start an online curation portfolio

                                                         KENTON LARSEN 10
Lesson Plan #2: Technology
Technology and resources involved:
1. Students will use different technology and resources for their curation
(all available online and by mobile apps):
     Scoop.it (http://www.scoop.it)
     Instapaper (http://www.instapaper.com
     Delicious (https://delicious.com)
     Pinterest (http://pinterest.com)
2. Other software required:
     Web browser
     Regular Internet connection

                                                          KENTON LARSEN 11
Lesson Plan #2: Scoop.it, Instapaper,
Delicious, and Pinterest

1. Scoop.it:publish an online magazine by curating content on
     the topic of your choice
2. Instapaper:save Web pages and articles you want to “read
     later”
3. Delicious: a social-bookmarking site where you can
“showcase your passions from across the Web” by saving
and tagging stuff that interests you
4. Pinterest: “pin” images and videos that interest you

                                                    KENTON LARSEN 12
Lesson Plan #2: Scoop.it, Instapaper,
Delicious, and Pinterest
Scoop.it Instructions:
• Choose a topic (whatever interests you)
• Setup a profile
• Search and follow me, and I’ll follow you
Instapaper Instructions:
• Search for me on Instapaper by syncing your
  account with Twitter
• Follow me and I’ll follow you
Delicious and Pinterest Instructions:
• Search and follow me, and I’ll follow you

                                                KENTON LARSEN 13
Lesson Plan #2: Scoop.it, Instapaper,
Delicious, and Pinterest
Final instructions:
1. Give them all a try and see which one you find most useful
   and why
2. Become master of your online domain to become a great
communication professional who is always at the forefront

Rohit Bhargava does a nice job of breaking down content curation into these
aggregation, distillation, elevation, mashups, and chronology:
