• #3: 30 year old not-for-profit based in Adelaide, Australia.We deliver the program in New Zealand and are supported by Social Development Partners.We run similar programs in Australia (formerly under the DonorTec name) and through Asia (under the TechSoup Asia name)We deliver these programs in partnership with TechSoup Global, a nonprofit that has partners in close to 40 countries delivering this program.
• #4: Technology companies such as Microsoft, Symantec and more donate their products to Australian not-for-profits.This way not-for-profits can spend their money on service delivery instead of IT equipment.Each donor partner offers a generous amount of software per organisation and in some cases we can assist with any extra you may need.Connecting Up do not receive funding for this program. We keep it sustainable by charging a small administration fee on each order, which is generally equal to about 4-8% of retail price.
• #5: So what do most organisations order?The Microsoft donation program is clearly our most popular donations program.Most small organisations take the opportunity to upgrade all of their computers to the same version of Windows and Office, even if this is one or two computers.Organisations with more computers generally order Windows Server, and use the savings from the donation to pay contractors to properly install and setup their server. A server allows organisations to share files in a common area, and you can use Microsoft Exchange to host your own shared email and calendars.
• #6: Donated Microsoft licences are actually volumelicences. This provides you with two years software assurance.Software assurance gives you upgrade and downgrade rights for two years. This means that if you order Office 2013 today, you can downgrade to Office 2010 if you need to, and you can upgrade to any version of Office released in the next 2 years. They just appear in the Volume Licensing Service Centre for you to download, often before the retail release.
• #7: Microsoft Office 2013 is the latest version. It is more evolution than revolution compared to Office 2010, and has been refined in almost every way.Microsoft Office includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, which are almost staples of every organisation, as well as Publisher which is a great program for producing newsletters and posters.There are also new features to work on documents and review as a team.Office 2013 is available in the Standard and Professional Plus.Standard includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, OneNote and SkyDrive Pro.Professional Plus adds Access, InfoPath, Lync and Business Contact Manager for Outlook.
• #8: Windows 8 is the latest and greatest operating system from Microsoft.The new start menu takes some getting used to, but Windows 8 is faster than previous versions of Windows as well as being more secure and reliable.If you’re still using Windows XP, now is the time to upgrade with support ending for Windows XP in April next year.
• #9: Must be renewed yearly.Symantec donate their desktop and enterprise solutions. This includes Norton 360, Norton Anti-virus for Mac, and Symantec Endpoint Protection.Donated Symantec – just order a new donation. You can place one order per year.Sophos/Kaspersky – for renewal, order renewal licences, cheaper than initial buySophos/Kaspersky more designed for larger not-for-profits – includes tools which are an IT managers dream.
• #10: Adobe Acrobat XI Pro is Adobe’s latest version of their PDF creating tool. It gives you a lot more control over your PDFs, including the ability to adjust and compress PDFs for email, prepare documents for print and secure documents which might contain sensitive material.Acrobat is also part of Adobe CS6 Design & Web Premium. So if you have more than one member of staff that needs Acrobat Pro, order the single product. If you only have one person and they need to work with web or print graphics, order the Creative Suite.New in Microsoft Office 2013 is limited PDF creation and editing functionality. For many organisations that just want to produce basic PDFs from Word documents this may be sufficient.
• #11: GiftWorks is a great fundraising and donor management tool for not-for-profits. It was designed specifically for not-for-profits and can be used to track donors and donations. It includes reporting and email features.For larger organisations that require more advanced fundraising management, Microsoft Dynamics is a Customer or Constituent Relationship Management system, otherwise known as a CRM, which can be developed into a solution to track donors. The learning curve will be higher but there are templates to setup Dynamics for your requirements, and there are a number of providers who can set this up for you.
• #12: Microsoft Project is a popular solution for managing the implementation of grants activities. It includes the ability to manage tasks and programs so you can keep a track of milestones and other project management requirements.
