Technology and the modern learner
Andy Stopps, Director of e-Learning

Before we begin…
• What is your closet HONEST opinion of
e-learning?
a) Hate it – so far it’s not been of any benefit to me
b) A necessary evil – it ticks a box, that’s all
c) I’m a growing convert – we’re starting to utilise it
more
d) Love it – we’re seeing some great results from it
Our Opinion
“The greatest moments of our lives are unlikely to have
required wifi” Anonymous quote from Twitter
Our most memorable learning will most likely have come from
an interaction with someone else – a teacher, trainer,
colleague or mentor.
But learning digitally is becoming increasingly more common
and does have obvious benefits
Don’t fret, e-learning is not all I’m
going to talk about today
• What we’ll cover
– What is a “modern learner”?
– What role does technology play in learning?
– The future of technology in learning
– When technology can hinder learning
Modern Learners
* These are generalisations based upon
research, experience and observations!

Pub Quiz
• The rules –
– 5 questions
– No prizes
– Just write your answers on your pad
– NO USE OF TECHNOLOGY PERMITTED
Pub Quiz
1) History – Between what years were the Boer War fought?
2) Sport – How many Olympic medals did Team GB win at the 2016 Rio
summer games?
3) Geography – What road links Dundee with Aberdeen?
4) Music – What song was number 1 in the UK chart at the time of the royal
wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton?
5) Entertainment – As of 1st May 2017, to the nearest 0.1 billion, how many
views of the most viewed clip on Youtube has there been (Gangnam Style
by Psy)?

Technology and the modern learner
“Google-isation”
The constant availability of the Internet through
computers, tablets and, most importantly,
smart phones, means we no longer need to
retain information in the same way as we did
pre-Internet. We just need to learn how to
access that information efficiently.

On Demand
• How many TV channels did you have when you were growing
up?
– BBC 1 = 1936
– ITV = 1955
– BBC 2 = 1964
– Channel 4 = 1982
– Channel 5 = 1997
On Demand

LMS?
• Quick question – Do you have a Learning
Management System (LMS)?
a) Yes
b) No
What is happening in Learning
Technology (but many people don’t know about)
SCORM
SCORM
• Shareable Content Object Reference Model
– January 2000 — SCORM Version 1.0
– January 2001 — SCORM Version 1.1
– October 2001 — SCORM Version 1.2
– January 2004 — SCORM 2004 (1st Edition)
– July 2004 — SCORM 2004 (2nd Edition)
– October 2006 — SCORM 2004 (3rd Edition)
– March 2009 — SCORM 2004 (4th Edition)
Tin Can API – the next version of SCORM
The non technical version of what it is:
The learning activity generates a statement that contains a verb
that is then recorded (in a Learning Record Store – LRS)
Mary PASSED her Fire Safety at Work module…on 04/05/2017
John EXPERIENCED Cooking for beginners
Nathan FAILED Managing Conflict…with a score of 52%
Eh???
Learning Record Store (LRS)
If you do have an LMS then this capability should be bolted on.
What does that mean??
Tin Can Statements
• You don’t need an expensive LMS
• The statements aren’t restricted by technology
• You can also include learning undertaken using social
media profiles
• It builds up a record of all learning
We’ve taken it one step further
• Users can generate their own statements for all learning
which are held in the LRS
The Future – their take
The Future – my take
Tin Can API / xAPI / Experience API Statements
Mobile learning Social learning Wearable Tech Augmented RealityE-learning /
Webinars
Face-to-Face Learning
It is also now easier than ever to make
your own e-learning modules
• There are a number of authoring
tools
• All use PowerPoint with the ability
to include a range of media to
enhance the user experience
• Include interactivity & testing
• All offer mobile responsive
learning
• All allow you to publish to Tin Can
API
Projects that worked well with
e-learning
• Inductions – company information – policies & procedures
• Product training
• Standard Operating Procedures
• Management Skills – Appraisals, Interviews
• Sales and Negotiation refreshers
Where does e-learning sit?
70 : 20 : 10On-the-job Informal/Peer-led Formal/Trainer-led

Gamification
Gamification is not about
playing games to learn. It’s
about taking the concept of
levels and badges to recognise
when learning has taken place.
Micro Learning
• Microlearning is an emergent learning strategy known for
quickly closing skill and knowledge gaps.
• Using authoring tools you can create short, effective learning
interventions that help those who are demanding and time
poor
Mobile Learning
• Why aren’t there lots of companies offering
mobile learning?
– People are learning using their mobile devices using a range of apps
and websites – mobile learning is happening, it just isn’t being labelled
as such
– It’s possible to use authoring tools to
create your own “mobile learning” content
When Technology goes wrong
• When it distracts – I’m not going to tell you how to deal with
that
• When it is too complicated
• When it’s optional
• When it’s not tracked
• When it’s open to abuse – Fake News!!

Make learning easy to
find like a library
Create a platform
that’s on demand
Encourage them to
participate and
enhance the
learning you offer
Use gamification
and record learning Create mobile

Experience API/xAPI/Tin Can API
Micro learning
Summary
• It is now easier and more cost-effective to use learning
technology to satisfy the demands of modern learners
• You don’t need an expensive LMS or employ specialists to
host and create engaging content
• Learners are embracing technology in all aspects of their lives,
learning needs to be part of that
• E-Learning will play an important role, but people will still
learn best from interaction and great trainers.
Thank you
