The First Sino-Japanese War resulted in heavy casualties and significant territorial concessions for China. Through the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki, China was forced to recognize the independence of Korea and cede Taiwan and the Pescadores Islands to Japan. This marked the first time Chinese territory was ceded to a foreign power as a result of war. The war was a major blow to Chinese prestige and exposed weaknesses in the Qing military. It marked the beginning of Japanese imperialism and military expansion in Asia.
