The Advantages of Being
OPEN
By Renee Yong
#MANG2049
Open Access means...
● Giving literature to the world without expectation of payment
● Free availability on the Internet
● Permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print,
search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for
indexing, pass them as data to software. (Bailey, 2006)
● Recipients can use them for any other lawful purpose,
without financial, legal, or technical barriers other
than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet
itself. (Bailey, 2006)
Open Access means...
● The only constraint on reproduction and
distribution, and the only role for copyright in
this domain, should be to give authors control
over the integrity of their work and the right
to be properly acknowledged and cited.
(Bailey, 2006)
Open Access means...
Credit me,
please!
What does openness give?
● Increased audience
■ allowing access to your work
● Increased reuse
■ allowing adaptations of your work
● Increased experimentation
■ allowing feedback and participation
(Weller, 2013)
What does openness give?
● Increased revenue
■ allowing payment for additional
services, creating a demand for the
content
● Increased reputation
■ allowing an improvement of author’s
profile, establishing identity (Weller, 2013)
How will openness help?
● More people can see your work, build upon it
and cite you.
● Discovery is accelerated as a result of
openness.
(PHD Comics, 2012)
