The Art of Interviewing Goal: Show them your interest and enthusiasm…again Send an email 24 hours later Put the ball in their court Dear Mr./Ms. Hireme, Opening: The opening should state your reason for writing in one to four sentences. Here, express your appreciation for the opportunity to meet: It was a pleasure to meet you earlier today to discuss the summer internship in the Investment Banking Division in more detail. You could then mention something specific to your interaction: I enjoyed learning more about the division and your role within the firm. Body: Similar to your initial cover letter, this is the heart of the letter and can be anywhere from one to three paragraphs in length. While most candidates create a cookie-cutter thank you letter that briefly thanks the employer and mentions a discussion topic from the interview, this is an opportunity for you to reiterate why you’re the right candidate for the position and company! In light of all you learned in the interview—the department’s specific needs and expectations of the ideal candidate, doubts the interviewer has concerning your candidacy and/or key questions that you could have answered better—use this follow-up tactic as another self-sell! Close: The closing should reiterate your strongest selling points as it relates to the specific position and eagerness to add value to the department and company. Also, again thank the employer for his/her time and consideration. Sincerely, Your Name 6 Steps of an Interview 1. Introductions 2. Tell Me About Yourself 3. General Q&A 4 .Your Questions 5.
