This document summarizes a research project aiming to test the hypothesis of a cryptic species within the genus Davidaster crinoids through genetic barcoding. The project involved collecting samples from two known Davidaster species in the Bahamas, extracting DNA, performing PCR to amplify the DNA, sequencing the amplified DNA, and analyzing the sequences. Preliminary results from arm tissue samples were inconclusive, so the researchers plan to obtain whole crinoid samples on an expedition to Jamaica to repeat the process and better test for a cryptic species. The goal is to further understand biodiversity on fragile coral reef ecosystems.
